OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/09/2026, Newark police responded at about 9:30 a.m. to reports of gunfire at 772 Bergen Street and found two women wounded. Witnesses told police that 37-year-old Duquan Leonard, whom authorities identified as the suspected shooter, had gone back inside the residence.

Newark tactical officers surrounded the residence and treated the incident as a barricade while attempting to get Leonard to come outside. Residents reported that the standoff continued for hours.

Police eventually entered the residence and found Leonard with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene; the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office subsequently confirmed the death was self-inflicted.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the shooting and death.
