OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/10/2026, Richmond police began searching for 48-year-old Corey Chavis after finding 58-year-old Tanya Chavis shot to death at an apartment in the 4000 block of Dunston Avenue. Police obtained warrants for Chavis for possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon and shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Police tracked Chavis approximately seven miles to Oakwood Cemetery, where officers found him inside a vehicle with a woman. Richmond police cordoned off the cemetery and deployed SWAT and two armored rescue vehicles.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., as the armored vehicles approached, Chavis shot himself. The woman fled the vehicle and was secured by police; officers then used a drone to approach the vehicle before SWAT entered and found Chavis dead. Police recovered a handgun from the vehicle.
