OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/11/2026, at approximately 10:45 p.m., a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officer shot and killed Asia Bennett, 22, after officers were dispatched to a reported domestic disturbance involving Bennett and her boyfriend at a residence on Westdale Drive near Pine Bluff Drive in Jacksonville.

.

According to JSO, the first officer arrived and encountered Bennett’s boyfriend outside. Police said the boyfriend reported that he and Bennett had been arguing and that Bennett was inside the residence with a knife.

.

JSO alleged that Bennett then came outside carrying several objects, including a large kitchen knife. Police said the officer ordered Bennett to put down what she was holding. Bennett placed some items on the ground but continued holding the knife. The officer repeatedly ordered her to drop it.

.

JSO alleged that Bennett moved toward the officer while holding the knife. The officer fired one round, striking Bennett and knocking her to the ground. Police alleged that Bennett continued holding the knife, began getting back up and again moved toward the officer. The officer fired a second round.

.

Police said Bennett then dropped the knife. Officers rendered medical aid, and Bennett was transported to a hospital, where she died from the police gunfire.

.

Bennett’s mother, Crissy Duncan, publicly identified her daughter after the shooting and sharply questioned the officer’s use of deadly force. Duncan described Bennett as approximately 110 pounds and said her daughter was a domestic violence victim who needed help rather than police gunfire. Duncan said Bennett had been experiencing domestic abuse and disputed the characterization of her daughter as a threat. News4Jax reported that Duncan said she wanted answers about why police killed her daughter.

.

The shooting remains under investigation. JSO’s officer-shooting records state that police shootings undergo State Attorney’s Office review to determine whether the use of deadly force was legally justified, followed by JSO administrative review concerning department policy and training. As a newly occurring case, those reviews have not yet produced a final disposition.
