OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/15/2026, an unidentified person was killed along with two passengers when the 2013 Ford Fusion they were driving crashed during a police pursuit in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.
.
At approximately 2:08 a.m., the Ford Fusion was traveling east on Fosters Grove Road while being pursued by law enforcement. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the vehicle crossed U.S. Highway 221, ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.
.
The vehicle became engulfed in flames almost immediately after the collision. The driver and both passengers died at the scene. The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office said the three occupants were badly burned and could not immediately be identified. The vehicle also carried an out-of-state license plate, complicating efforts to identify the occupants.
.
Spartanburg County Sheriff Bill Rhyne subsequently said investigators discovered that Deb’s Mini Mart near the crash site had been burglarized at approximately 2:03 a.m. Evidence and surveillance video reportedly showed a masked person leaving the store and getting into the Ford Fusion. Investigators said an item dropped by that person matched property stolen from the store.
.
Rhyne said deputies pursuing the vehicle were unaware at the time that the convenience-store burglary had occurred. The publicly available reporting therefore does not establish the burglary as the reason police initially attempted to stop or pursue the Fusion.
.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal collision. The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office is working to identify the three people killed.
