NARRATIVE:
On 08/15/2026, an unidentified man was killed when his vehicle crashed, overturned and caught fire after he fled from Houston police officers responding to reported vehicle burglaries in the Heights area of Houston.

At approximately 4:00 a.m., a security guard at the Lenox Timbergrove apartment complex on West 11th Street near Ella Boulevard called 911 after seeing a person breaking into vehicles. Houston police said surveillance footage showed the man moving through multiple floors of the parking garage and pulling on vehicle door handles. Police said he entered at least one vehicle and removed property.

According to HPD, when officers arrived, the man turned off his vehicle's lights in an apparent effort to avoid detection. Officers followed his vehicle out of the parking garage and activated their emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to stop him. Police said the driver accelerated away and officers subsequently lost sight of the vehicle.

Officers later located the vehicle overturned and burning near Nicholson Street and West 11th Street. Investigators said the driver had been traveling at more than 70 mph when the vehicle encountered an elevation change in the roadway and became airborne for an estimated 15 to 20 feet.

The vehicle came back down, bounced, rolled over, struck a tree and caught fire. The driver was found dead inside the vehicle. No other deaths were reported.

Houston police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
