OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/03/2026, 34-year-old Jacob Rader was shot and killed by two New Lebanon Police Department officers at a residence in the 100 block of North Fuls Road in New Lebanon, Ohio. Police were at the residence while following up on a recently reported stolen vehicle.

.
New Lebanon Police Chief Darrin Townsend said officers confirmed that the reported stolen vehicle was at the North Fuls Road residence and approached the home at approximately 9:43 a.m. Officers knocked on the door and made contact with Rader.

.
According to Townsend, Rader had a handgun when officers encountered him. The department subsequently released still images taken from officers' body-worn camera footage that police said show Rader displaying the gun and then pointing it toward one of the officers. Townsend said two New Lebanon officers then fired their weapons, striking Rader.

.
Police said a handgun was recovered at the scene with one round remaining in the chamber. Farmersville medics attempted lifesaving measures, but Rader died at the scene.

.
Rader's mother, Paula Rader, gave a substantially different account of the encounter. She said she was asleep inside the home when police arrived and heard officers tell her son that they were going to use a Taser before hearing multiple gunshots. She said her son had mental health problems and disputed the police account that he was armed, saying she did not believe he possessed a weapon because he was on probation.

.
The two officers who fired were placed on administrative leave. Their names have not been publicly disclosed in the reporting located to date. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is conducting the investigation. Chief Townsend said the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was not called because the sheriff's office was serving as the outside investigating agency.
