OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/14/2026, an unidentified 64-year-old man died after suffering a medical emergency while in NYPD custody at the 25th Precinct station house in East Harlem. Police had arrested the man earlier that day and transported him to the precinct, where the medical emergency occurred. The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner will determine his cause and manner of death.
.
According to police accounts, officers had responded to a residence on East 119th Street following a report involving a man who was allegedly violent and had a weapon. Police arrested the 64-year-old on allegations of criminal mischief and menacing and transported him to the 25th Precinct.
.
At approximately 12:20 p.m., while still in police custody, he experienced a medical emergency. Police began lifesaving measures and emergency medical personnel transported him to Mount Sinai Hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly before 1:30 p.m.
.
The NYPD Force Investigation Division is reviewing the officers' body-worn-camera footage, and Gothamist reports that NYPD described this specifically as an internal force investigation.
Detectives are reviewing body-worn camera footage to establish the chronology of the arrest and the man's time in custody before the medical emergency.
.
The older CCRB data compiled by ProPublica is pretty substantial: through July 2020, officers serving in the 25th Precinct had accumulated 119 civilian complaints containing 325 allegations involving 53 officers. Those allegations include physical force, pointing guns, improper stops/searches, threats of force, refusal of medical treatment and other misconduct.
