On 08/14/2026, 78-year-old Paul Ronald Selby of Mentone was shot and killed by San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies following an hours-long barricade at his home in the 300 block of King Street. Deputies had responded after workers trimming trees near Selby's property reported that he fired a gun toward them.

At approximately 10:50 a.m., deputies from the Yucaipa Sheriff’s Station responded to reports that Selby had fired multiple rounds toward workers conducting vegetation-management work within an easement on his property. The workers included Southern California Edison employees and contractors from ACE Tree Enterprises and Evergreen Traffic Control. None of the workers was struck.

When deputies arrived, Selby barricaded himself inside his residence. The Sheriff's Specialized Enforcement Division and crisis negotiators responded. Authorities said deputies spent several hours making announcements directing Selby to leave the residence and attempting to obtain his surrender.

Deputies subsequently deployed chemical munitions into the residence. Selby's wife exited the home and was removed from the scene, while Selby remained inside.

Shortly after 2:00 p.m., the Sheriff's Department said Selby fired at deputies from inside the residence. Deputies returned fire and struck him. Medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but Selby was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sheriff's Specialized Investigations Division is investigating the fatal shooting. The publicly released information does not identify the deputy or deputies who fired at Selby.
