NARRATIVE:
On 08/16/2026, 23-year-old Tyler Wilson was shot and killed by two Taylorsville Police Department officers outside the Callaway Apartments at 1141 W. 3900 S. in Taylorsville, Utah. Police had been dispatched at about 10:30 p.m. after a tenant called 911 to report that someone was attempting to break into his apartment.

While officers were on their way, the caller reported that he had been stabbed. Police later alleged that Wilson, who also lived at the apartment complex, had entered the unit and stabbed the 32-year-old tenant multiple times. The injured man was taken to a hospital in critical condition and was later upgraded to stable condition.

When officers arrived, they encountered Wilson outside the apartment. Taylorsville police alleged that Wilson was armed with a knife. Two officers then fired their guns, striking Wilson. Police have not yet publicly released a detailed account of exactly what Wilson did immediately before the officers opened fire.

A witness interviewed by FOX 13 said officers warned Wilson to drop a weapon before the shooting. Authorities have not yet released body-camera footage or a complete sequence of commands and actions leading to the gunfire.

Officers and medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but Wilson died at the scene.

The Salt Lake City Police Department is leading the independent investigation under Utah's Officer-Involved Critical Incident protocol. The two Taylorsville officers who shot Wilson were placed on administrative leave while the investigation is pending.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Taylorsville Police Department has not publicly identified the two officers who shot and killed Wilson. Their identities are needed to determine whether either officer has a history of prior shootings, significant use-of-force incidents, discipline, complaints or civil litigation. Both officers were placed on administrative leave following the shooting.
