OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
NARRATIVE:
On 08/14/2026, 20-year-old Ryan Herrera of Yonkers was killed when the red Toyota Supra he was driving left the roadway and struck a tree in the Mount Pleasant/Briarcliff Manor area of Westchester County, New York. His passenger, 21-year-old Jaden D. Sanabria of the Bronx, was also killed.
.
At approximately 4:00 a.m., a Mount Pleasant Police Department patrol officer saw Herrera's Supra traveling at approximately 100 mph. The officer pulled onto Route 9A and initiat4ed a pursuit, attempting to catch up to the vehicle. Police said the officer activated the patrol vehicle's emergency lights as the Supra approached the intersection of Route 9A and North State Road in Briarcliff Manor.
.
According to police, the Supra had no visible license plates and extremely dark window tint. Police alleged Herrera accelerated away and the officer lost sight of the vehicle. The officer subsequently encountered debris in the roadway and saw headlights in the brush near the Route 100 northbound entrance ramp, where the Supra had crashed.
.
Police said approximately 28 seconds elapsed between the officer's initial radio transmission concerning the Supra and the officer locating the crashed vehicle.
.
Herrera and Sanabria were found unresponsive in the heavily damaged Supra. Both men were transported to Westchester Medical Center, where they died from their injuries.
.
Investigators determined that the Supra had been rented to Herrera through a social-media platform. The person who rented the vehicle provided investigators access to its GPS data. According to police, the GPS showed that the Supra had exceeded 100 mph multiple times that morning, reached a maximum recorded speed of 134 mph, and was recorded at approximately 108 mph shortly before the Mount Pleasant officer encountered it.
.
Police reported finding two stolen semiautomatic pistols inside the wrecked vehicle, one near Sanabria and another between Herrera's legs. Police also said both men were wearing balaclavas and were not wearing seat belts. These allegations concern evidence discovered after the fatal crash and were not the stated reason the officer initially attempted to catch the Supra.
.
The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation is reviewing the deaths because of the police involvement immediately preceding the crash.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Mount Pleasant Police Department has not publicly identified the patrol officer who observed Herrera's vehicle, pulled onto Route 9A to catch up to it, and activated emergency lights before the fatal crash.
