NARRATIVE:
On 03/08/2026, a 37-year-old man died after suffering a medical emergency while in the custody of the Binghamton Police Department following an arrest and overnight hospitalization in Binghamton, New York. The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation subsequently opened an investigation into his death.

The police encounter began on 03/07/2026 after Binghamton officers responded to the area of West State Street and Chenango Street. Police alleged the man was obstructing a Broome County Transit bus, climbing onto the exterior of the bus and behaving erratically.

Police attempted to take the man into custody. According to authorities, a struggle occurred before officers were able to restrain and arrest him. Rather than immediately taking him to police headquarters or jail, emergency medical personnel transported him by ambulance to Binghamton General Hospital for evaluation. He remained hospitalized overnight while still in police custody.
