REASON FOR CHASE: Spartanburg County sheriff's deputies attempted to make contact with the occupants of a 2013 Ford Fusion at approximately 2 a.m. Sheriff Bill Rhyne said the incident was connected to a burglary at a nearby business and that at least one occupant of the vehicle may have been involved. The publicly available reporting reviewed so far does not establish that deputies knew who was in the vehicle or had identified a particular occupant as responsible for the burglary before the pursuit began.

NARRATIVE:
On 08/15/2026, 17-year-old Danny Kravtsov of Spartanburg was killed along with passengers Luke Sherashenkov, 15, and Gennadii Kretov, 19, when the Ford Fusion Kravtsov was driving crashed into a tree and caught fire during a pursuit by the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.

The encounter began at approximately 2 a.m. when Spartanburg County sheriff's deputies attempted to make contact with the occupants of the Ford Fusion. Sheriff Bill Rhyne said the incident was connected to a burglary at a nearby business and that the occupants drove away from deputies.

The pursuit continued onto Foster Grove Road. At approximately 2:08 a.m., while traveling near the intersection with U.S. Highway 221, the Ford Fusion left the right side of the roadway, struck a tree and immediately caught fire.

Kravtsov, Sherashenkov and Kretov all died at the scene. The fire was so severe that the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office initially could not identify the three occupants. Coroner Rusty Clevenger subsequently identified all three through dental records.

The coroner identified Kravtsov as the driver. The cause of death for each occupant remained pending as of 08/19/2026.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office has not publicly identified the deputy or deputies who initiated and participated in the pursuit. Further information is needed concerning the pursuit speed, duration and distance, whether supervisors monitored or authorized continuation of the pursuit, and whether any deputy attempted a pursuit intervention before the fatal crash.
