On 08/21/2026 shortly after 8:00 p.m., Cambridge Police Department officers responded to Temple Street in Central Square after a caller reported suspicious people who had been in a loading dock or parking lot behind area businesses for an extended period.

Officers contacted the people in the parking lot. Police claimed a man in his 60s who had been sitting inside a vehicle got out and pointed a loaded firearm at officers. Officers then attempted to physically disarm him, resulting in a physical struggle. Multiple shots were fired during the encounter, striking the man. Authorities have not yet disclosed how many officers fired or the number of shots.

Police provided medical aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said a loaded firearm was recovered from him. Several Cambridge police officers were taken to area hospitals as a precaution and later released.

The officers involved were wearing body cameras, and investigators are reviewing the recordings. The Middlesex District Attorney's Office is investigating the fatal shooting.

This was the second fatal Cambridge police shooting in just over three years. On 01/04/2023, Cambridge Officer Liam McMahon shot and killed 20-year-old Sayed Faisal during a mental health crisis. Faisal's killing led to substantial public criticism of the department and calls for greater transparency; Cambridge subsequently implemented department-wide body cameras in April 2025.
