On 08/28/2026, Kenneth Williams Sr., 67, was working as a security guard at the Metro station at 4th Avenue and Broadway in Gary when he was shot and killed during an encounter involving Gary police and Lake County sheriff’s officers. Indiana State Police initially described Williams as a “suspect,” but as of 08/30 had not disclosed why police confronted him, what preceded the shooting, whether Williams was armed, or which officer or agency fired the fatal shots. Williams’ family said he had gone to the station for his regular security job and is demanding an explanation for the shooting.
The Lake County Coroner’s Medicolegal Death Investigation Team arrived at 12:10 a.m. on 08/29; Williams was identified by family and his death was certified at 1:00 a.m. A forensic autopsy is scheduled for 09/01/2026 at the Lake County Forensic Science Center in Crown Point. Indiana State Police are investigating.
