Jackson County deputies escalated a chase on Page Avenue in Blackman Township until the vehicle crashed on E. Michigan Avenue and Dettman Road. The five occupants of the Jeep Wrangler, ranging in ages from 15 to 17, had been driving around the county shooting at vehicles with an Orbeez gel ball toy gun prior to the chase. An Orbeez gun is a toy gun that shoots small balls made of gel.
Deputies had attempted to initiate a traffic stop, activated their overhead lights and siren and chased the Jeep until it crashed and rolled over multiple times near the intersection of Roberts and E. Ganson streets.
Deputies approached the crashed vehicle with guns drawn and detained three teens. Jordan Jarrell, a 15-year-old boy was severely injured after being ejected during the first crash and died from his injuries. Another 15-year-old was treated at the hospital before being taken by helicopter to Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor in critical condition.Another passenger remains in serious condition at Henry Ford with a broken neck.Officers found an Orbeez gun and fifth of alcohol in a search of the vehicle.

Doroteo Martinez-Castro was involved in a head-on crash April 22 in unincorporated Haines City at the intersection of U.S. Highway 17/92 and Lee Jackson Highway North. One man died from his injuries shortly after the crash. Martinez-Castro was charged with DUI manslaughter, was arrested after being treated and released.

After being booked into the Polk County Jail, he became ill in the South County Jail medical dorm. He was taken to ahospital where he died. An initial autopsy shows he died from "crash-related internal injuries," deputies noted.

Fauquier County deputies had been chasing Robinson after he allegedly drove away from a DWI checkpoint. Police state that he hit the Camry and drove off the road, hitting a guardrail. Later, Fauquier County PD responded to a two-car crash near the intersection of Lee Highway and Bull Run Post Office Road, finding Ashton Robinson, who had been thrown from his car and was dead.

Criminal investigation following a 911 call alleging Nutt had stolen a motorcycle.

NARRATIVE:
On 04/20/2023 at approximately 5:16 p.m., Pemberton Township Police Officer LaQuan Jett attempted to stop a motorcycle driven by 41-year-old John R. Nutt of Mount Laurel after police received a 911 call concerning an incident involving Nutt and his passenger. A police pursuit followed.

The pursuit traveled along County Route 687 West. Released police dash-camera footage showed Jett traveling through traffic for more than a minute before approaching the motorcycle from behind. The motorcycle then accelerated away for approximately 30 seconds.

Near Davis Street, Nutt attempted to pass an uninvolved minivan on the right as the minivan moved toward the right side of the roadway. The motorcycle collided with the minivan.

Nutt was killed in the crash. His motorcycle passenger suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital in critical condition. The passenger later recovered and was released. The two occupants of the minivan declined medical treatment.

Troopers from Pennsylvania State Police's Stroudsburg barracks initiated a traffic stop for both "moving, equipment violations and suspicion of DUI" on April 20. The driver had an active arrest warrant and allegedly refused to exit the vehicle and “proceeded to become combative” and fled the traffic stop. Pennsylvania State Police escalated a chase of the fleeing vehicle for 19 miles before it crashed into a wooded area, chasing the driver for 19 miles before he crashed. Passenger Lidia Burgos was killed by the police chase crash.

Indianapolis PD conducted an investigation that evolved into a vehicle chase and shootout, killing Daniel Yefter Ghebrehiwet. At about12:40 p.m., officers with the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force and Lawrence Police Department saw a man they felt was responsible for a prior shooting. The driver fled and Task Force officers attempted to forcibly stop the vehicle. The driver fled until he crashed in a parking lot. A shootout ensued and Ghebrehiwet was shot and killed.

Barry Baker Jr. was fleeing from police on his motorcycle in Honey Brook Township, Chester County, on April 20. As a result of being chased, he crashed at the intersection of Chestnut Tree Road and Horseshoe Pike after running a red light at the intersection. He was thrown from the motorcycleand died. Police allege that the motorcycle had been reported stolen.

Around 11 p.m. on April 19, police said they spotted a vehicle that drove away as officers approached. Police escalated a chase that reportedly reached speeds of 90 mph and ended at an intersection when the vehicle went off-road and struck a tree before bursting into flames. Fourteen-year-old Jaden Bowman died. He had been reported missing by his parents previously.

Henry Najdeski, a prominent real estate lawyer, died after being struck by a pickup driven by on-duty officer Sgt. Joshua Hartup on April 19 as he walked across Main Street. Hartup struck Najdeski while he was making a left turn from Calhoun onto Main.Officer Hartup had been involved in four other squad car crashes in 2000, 2005, 2007, and 2019, all four of which were ruled “preventable” by the Accident Review Board. After the most recent crash, Hartup was directed to undergo two more hours of mandatory remedial driver’s training in addition to a reprimand. He then killed Henry Nadejski in the next crash.

Ana Ortega was walking a dog when she was hit and killed by a truck driven by an unnamed off-duty Clovis police officer Wednesday morning at about 7:50 a.m. on Clinton Avenue between Bethel and Greenwood avenues.The officer’sChevrolet truck was traveling east on Clinton and Bethel while Ortega was walking her dog west on Clinton on the roadway when the truck veered into the direction of the woman causing critical injuries. Deandre Shepard Jr. was being chased by Gardena PD on April 16, 2023 at about 2:40 a.m. and crashed and died at 94th Street and Harvard Boulevard. A Gardena PD patrol officer saw him driving recklessly in the city of Gardena and began chasing him which ended when he crashed and died. The officer’s car allegedly became disabled during the high-speed chase and Shepard crashed shortly after that.

At around 4:19 a.m. April 15, CHP Officer Javier Navarro on patrol spotted a gray Jeep Compass without a license plate on Interstate 15 in the Corona area. The driver Trayvon Antwan Ford did not stop. CHP escalated a high-speed freeway chase, reaching speeds up to 127 miles per hour, exiting and re-entering the freeway several times, with Ford ultimately crashing at the I-15 offramp. The Jeep rolled and two passengers were ejected with significant injuries. Trayvon Ford died at the hospital. The stated reason for this dangerous and lethal police pursuit was a missing license plate.

Iowa State Patrol officer Waylon Wasson escalated a chase against a speeding driver who raced through town at 130 mph to escape the deputy. The car crashed into a Chevy sedan that burst into flames, killing third party motorist Duane Sievert.

Officer Wasson had previously shot someone in June of 2022 when he arrived at the wrong address and killed a homeowner.

On 04/13/2023, a 41-year-old Hammond man was riding on a motorcycle, traveling on Broadway when an officer with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department attempted to pull him over because there was no visible license plate. The man left the traffic stop. The officer escalated a chase and allegedly lost sight of the motorcycle near 11th and Broadway where the motorcycle crashed into a car, causing the vehicle to roll over. The motorcyclist died. Police never identified him publicly.

Gardena PD were chasing a man in a gray Dodge Charger for speeding and not stopping at red traffic lights early Tuesday morning.
The driver fled into the L.A. area, at which time officers claimed that they “terminated the pursuit.”The man crashed into multiple parked cars shortly after 2:30 a.m. near West 94th Street and Harvard Boulevard and was killed. Another unnamed person was injured. Police did not publicly identify the person who was killed.

David Earl Kingsley was on his way to the dog park with his beloved dog Nakita just before 5 a.m. A car driven by off-duty Metro Officer Benjamin Coreas collided with him forcefully, gravely injuring the man. His dog was confiscated by police as Kingsley went to the ICU. Kingsley languished in the hospital for several more days before he died. Police arrived at the family home and confiscated all of Nakita’s puppies, announcing all dogs would be placed for adoption because having unregistered puppies violated Las Vegas city ordinance. The officer was finally also arrested. After a public outcry, the family was given back the dog and puppies several weeks later. It is unknown whether the officer will face any charges for having caused a fatality while severely intoxicated.

The pursuit continued through a 25-mph zone before reaching College Street and Court Street, where the Honda crashed into two other vehicles. The collision caused a violent three-vehicle wreck, with two vehicles catching fire.

One of the vehicles contained Tina Vital, 43, and her 4-year-old granddaughter Adalina Lilah Perez. Vital was killed at the scene. Perez was critically injured. Approximately 11 people were injured altogether, including the 13-year-old driver.

Mattherw Roy Chelgren was driving an SUV when a Pennsylvania State Trooper escalated a chase for unknown reasons, attacked him with a PIT maneuver which forced him to crash into a tree and die from what his family states was a slow painful death. Chelgren had been a popular tattoo artist and is described as having been a kind soul. Police did not comment why they created this deadly chase. Chelgren’s family filed suit which states that the reason for the chase was a minor traffic violation.

Around 12:16 a.m. on 04/05/2023, police attempted to make a traffic stop. The driver, however, refused to stop and fled until he crashed into another vehicle, killing 39-year-old third party motorist Noe Barron Garcia who had just gotten off third shift and was driving home. Police allege they did not chase the driver but were nearby. Garcia was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries where he later died.

Police were conducting surveillance on two Kias reported stolen. Norman Levine III allegedly got into one of the vehicles and when police tried to conduct a traffic stop, he fled and police escalated a long intense chase. The St. Louis Metro PD then took over the case and reported that third party motorist Jerome Hightowerwhose car the police chase had crashed into had died.
Bystanders said they saw kids being taken out of the Kia after the crash. A police report stated there were two 3-year-olds inside the car at the time of the police chase and crash. The children and two other adults who were inside the car at the time were listed in stable condition following the incident. Jerome Hightower, the driver of the car who was hit by the chase, died.

NARRATIVE:
On 04/04/2023 at approximately 1:25 a.m., Houston Police Department Southeast Patrol officers saw 34-year-old Orlando Gross driving a green Mercedes-Benz C-Class at a high rate of speed and running a red light at Bellfort Avenue and Cullen Boulevard. Officers attempted a traffic stop and then initiated a pursuit when the Mercedes continued away.

Gross continued eastbound on Bellfort Avenue, running multiple red lights. According to Houston police, the pursuit lasted only about one minute.

As Gross approached Bellfort Avenue and South Wayside Drive, the Mercedes left the travel lanes and entered the ditch separating the eastbound and westbound lanes. The car struck a manhole and flipped, ejecting Gross.

Gross was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the Mercedes was not believed to have been stolen, and they did not initially know why Gross continued away from the attempted traffic stop.

On 04/02/2023, Bianca Colon-Hernandez, 26, was killed when a Vernon Police Department SUV driven by Officer Andre Lisee struck the Nissan Sentra in which she and her 3-year-old son were passengers at Hartford Turnpike and Bolton Road in Vernon. Colon-Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene. Her son suffered serious injuries.

Lisee was responding to an emergency request for assistance from officers handling a domestic violence incident. Lisee told investigators that he heard an officer urgently requesting additional units and popping sounds over the radio that he believed might be gunfire. The sounds were later determined to have come from a Taser deployment.

The Manchester Police Department investigated the collision because it involved a Vernon officer. Investigators determined that Lisee accelerated to approximately 90 mph on Hartford Turnpike, where the posted speed limit was 35 mph. His emergency lights and siren were activated.

Colon-Hernandez's fiancé was driving the Nissan and attempted to turn left onto Bolton Road in front of Lisee's approaching police vehicle. Investigators concluded that the driver failed to yield and was impaired by alcohol and THC. He was subsequently criminally charged. However, investigators also concluded that Lisee's excessive speed contributed to the fatal collision and determined that the crash likely would not have occurred had Lisee been traveling between approximately 50 and 80 mph.

Investigators specifically concluded that Lisee's high speed and disregard for surrounding traffic likely contributed to the collision and Colon-Hernandez's death. Because of his speed, Lisee was unable to begin braking until a fraction of a second before impact, and investigators found no apparent pre-impact braking marks.

The Nissan was pushed roughly 100 feet, went over a curb and struck a tree. Lisee's police vehicle did not have a dash camera installed despite a Connecticut requirement that it have one. Available evidence included Lisee's body-worn camera and security footage from near the Vernon police station.

Colon-Hernandez's estate later sued Lisee and the Town of Vernon for negligence. The case was settled for $1.1 million through the town's insurance coverage. Lisee received no departmental discipline and returned to duty.

Andre Lisee was a Vernon Police Department officer with approximately four years at the department at the time of the fatal crash. He received no departmental discipline arising from Colon-Hernandez's death and returned to police duty.
