REASON FOR CHASE:
Criminal investigation following a 911 call alleging Nutt had stolen a motorcycle.

NARRATIVE:
On 04/20/2023 at approximately 5:16 p.m., Pemberton Township Police Officer LaQuan Jett attempted to stop a motorcycle driven by 41-year-old John R. Nutt of Mount Laurel after police received a 911 call concerning an incident involving Nutt and his passenger. A police pursuit followed.

The pursuit traveled along County Route 687 West. Released police dash-camera footage showed Jett traveling through traffic for more than a minute before approaching the motorcycle from behind. The motorcycle then accelerated away for approximately 30 seconds.

Near Davis Street, Nutt attempted to pass an uninvolved minivan on the right as the minivan moved toward the right side of the roadway. The motorcycle collided with the minivan.

Nutt was killed in the crash. His motorcycle passenger suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital in critical condition. The passenger later recovered and was released. The two occupants of the minivan declined medical treatment.

VIDEO / RECORDS:
The New Jersey Attorney General's Office released police dash-camera footage, body-camera footage and the 911 call associated with the pursuit and fatal crash.

ACCOUNTABILITY / LEGAL:
The New Jersey Office of Public Integrity and Accountability investigated Nutt's death. The investigation included witness interviews, photographs, video evidence and autopsy findings and was presented to a state grand jury. On 04/01/2024, the grand jury voted not to file criminal charges against Officer LaQuan Jett.
