KelvontaeZikel Banks was killed early Friday morning after an officer crashed into his car on Georgia Highway 85 near Riverdale. Family report that the Clayton County police car came out of nowhere. “No lights on, no nothing” said father of deceased. On 11/03/2022, 41-year-old Gary Macneil Sims of Ville Platte was killed when the Toyota Camry he was driving crashed during a Ville Platte Police Department pursuit in Evangeline Parish. Louisiana State Police explicitly confirmed that the attempted traffic stop developed into a pursuit that ended in the fatal crash.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m., a Ville Platte police officer attempted to stop the 2004 Toyota Camry after its owner reported unauthorized use of the vehicle. Sims continued driving at high speed, and the officer pursued him.

The pursuit continued onto Louisiana Highway 10. Near Pelican Road, Sims lost control while negotiating a curve. The Camry left the roadway, overturned several times and struck a utility pole.

On 10/31/2022, 61-year-old Denzil Ollen Broadhurst was killed in a collision with a Sacramento Police Department patrol vehicle driven by Officer Benjamin Jillson on Bell Avenue near May Street in Sacramento. Jillson was on duty and responding to a reported felony in progress. His emergency lights and siren were not activated.

Jillson was driving east on Bell Avenue when he made a U-turn to travel west. Broadhurst was riding his motorcycle westbound on Bell Avenue. Prosecutors later determined that Broadhurst attempted to brake when Jillson's patrol vehicle turned directly into his path. Broadhurst collided with the police vehicle.

Broadhurst suffered severe injuries and was transported alive to a hospital, where he died. Video evidence included Jillson's body-worn camera and privately owned surveillance footage that captured the collision.

Sacramento Police Department Major Collision Investigations Unit detectives investigated and concluded that the evidence supported a vehicular-manslaughter charge. The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office agreed. A judge issued a misdemeanor vehicular-manslaughter warrant for Jillson on 03/01/2023. Jillson surrendered to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, was processed and released, and remained on administrative leave with his peace-officer powers suspended.

On 10/31/2022, a 65-year-old Taylor man was struck and killed by an on-duty Taylor Police Department officer near Goddard Road and Westlake Avenue in Taylor, Michigan. The collision occurred at approximately 1:05 a.m.

According to Michigan State Police, the Taylor officer was responding to a call for service and was traveling at the posted speed. Police said the officer was looking to his left for an address when the patrol vehicle struck the man, who was in the roadway. Cedar Rapids officers tried to stop a black Chevy Tahoe for traffic violations on 33rd Avenue Southwest but the driver, Jamie Hill, didn’t stop. Cedar Rapids PD escalated a chase onto I-380 southbound when Hill took the Highway 30 West exit ramp, lost control and rolled the vehicle several times. He died at the scene.

On 10/29/2022, 23-year-old Vincent Anthoney Mancuso of Fort Edward was critically injured when his vehicle struck a tree on Ferry Boulevard in South Glens Falls following a New York State Police pursuit. He was transported to Glens Falls Hospital, where he died on 10/30/2022.

At approximately 10:15 p.m., New York State Police were conducting a DWI sobriety checkpoint on Hudson Falls Road in the Town of Moreau. Mancuso entered the checkpoint and was stopped. State Police said that after a brief conversation with a trooper, Mancuso drove away against the trooper's instructions.

Troopers pursued Mancuso with their emergency lights and sirens activated. State Police said the troopers eventually lost sight of his vehicle. A patrol subsequently located the vehicle on Ferry Boulevard in the Village of South Glens Falls.

According to the preliminary investigation, Mancuso failed to negotiate a curve on Ferry Boulevard, left the roadway and struck a large tree. Emergency responders extricated him from the wreckage and transported him to Glens Falls Hospital, where he later died.

A later Times Union investigation of fatal police pursuits in New York independently classified Mancuso's death as a police-pursuit fatality. It identified New York State Police as the pursuing agency, the ignored police checkpoint as the cited initiating offense, and Mancuso as the pursued driver.

On 10/20/2022, 39-year-old Guillermo Bracho Barrios was killed when a Toyota RAV4 fleeing an Atlanta Police Department traffic stop crashed into the Mitsubishi Outlander he was driving at Northside Drive and 14th Street in Atlanta. His front-seat passenger, 27-year-old Gemini Jerome Jackson, was also killed. Three passengers riding in the rear of Barrios's vehicle were injured.

Shortly before the crash, an Atlanta police officer attempted to stop the white Toyota RAV4 on Northside Drive near 17th Street for a traffic violation. APD said the driver activated his right-turn signal as though he were going to pull over, then abruptly accelerated away.

The Toyota continued south on Northside Drive and entered the intersection at 14th Street against a red light, colliding with Barrios's Mitsubishi. APD's subsequent review established that only approximately 37 seconds elapsed between the initiation of the attempted traffic stop and the fatal collision.

Larry Walker became tangled in the vehicle’s seatbelt when a carjacker stole his car and drove off, dragging Walker for several miles during a police chase with the vehicle owner dragging on the ground allegedly under the vehicle. Memphis Police officers were chasing a Dodge Avenger that had been reported stolen. On 10/13/2022, 63-year-old Larry Walker of La Habra was killed after he was carjacked and dragged underneath his own SUV for more than two miles while Los Angeles Police Department officers pursued murder suspect Joshua Reneau through South Los Angeles and Inglewood. Walker died from multiple blunt-force injuries, and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner classified his death as a homicide.

Earlier that day, LAPD detectives had obtained a murder warrant for a man and LAPD and FBI Fugitive Task Force personnel conducted surveillance near the residence in the 5900 block of 7th Avenue. Detectives saw him enter the rear seat of a Toyota Prius and leave the area. Uniformed LAPD officers followed and attempted to stop the vehicle, and a pursuit began.

The Prius , driven by 34-year-old Jamal Sutherland, crashed near Florence and Haas avenues in Inglewood after the initial pursuit. The wanted man got out and encountered Walker, who was driving a gray SUV. Reneau forcibly took Walker's vehicle, but Walker became entangled in the seatbelt while being pulled from it. Reneau drove away with Walker trapped outside and underneath his own vehicle.

Police continued pursuing Reneau while Walker was being dragged. LAPD reported that the pursuit continued for approximately three miles. Reneau collided with several police vehicles and ultimately overturned Walker's SUV near Prairie and Florence avenues in Inglewood. Walker became separated from the vehicle near the end of the pursuit and was pronounced dead at the scene.

On 10/13/2022, 28-year-old Jorge Moreno Lopez, a Guatemalan national, was killed when a Chevrolet pickup truck in which he was a passenger overturned into the South Llano River during a Texas Department of Public Safety pursuit that began near Rocksprings and ended in Kimble County near Junction.

Shortly after 2:00 a.m., DPS Trooper Justin Derr received a BOLO alert for a vehicle suspected of human smuggling. Derr located the black Chevrolet pickup on U.S. Highway 377 and attempted a traffic stop. The driver, 40-year-old Ruben Fernandez Sandoval of Austin, continued driving and Derr initiated a pursuit.

The pursuit continued north from the Rocksprings area toward Junction for more than 30 minutes. Later court-related reporting documented a pursuit distance of approximately 34 miles and speeds exceeding 90 mph.

As Sandoval approached a curve in Kimble County, he lost control of the pickup. The truck overturned and landed upside down in a low-water crossing in the South Llano River, leaving the cab submerged and multiple occupants trapped underwater.

Trooper Derr entered the water and attempted to rescue the occupants. U.S. Border Patrol personnel and other responding officers joined the rescue effort. Four passengers were rescued and transported for medical treatment, but Moreno Lopez drowned inside the overturned truck and died at the scene.

Texas DPS Trooper Justin Derr of Junction was publicly identified as the trooper who initiated and conducted the pursuit. DPS later awarded Derr a Lifesaving Award for entering the submerged vehicle and participating in the rescue of its occupants.

On October 13, 2022, Indiana State Police pursued a stolen U-Haul truck on the Indiana Toll Road toward Chicago. The driver continued at high speed despite commands to stop. Near Gary, the truck struck an SUV, hit a utility pole, rolled over, and came to rest near 5th Avenue and Jefferson Street. The driver of the stolen U-Haul was killed at the scene. Another motorist was injured and transported to the hospital.

Las Vegas Metro PD initiated a chase after a traffic stop for unknown reasons. Police chased the vehicle around 12:30 a.m. in the 8300 block of West Charleston Boulevard after he drove away from the traffic stop. The chase led to a fatal crash, killing Angel Ortega. Police did not answer any questions why the car was chased and how the fatal crash during their chase occurred. Three other occupants of the vehicle were injured also.

On 10/10/2022, 60-year-old Terry Wayne Hinton was killed when he was struck by a marked Tuscumbia Police Department vehicle driven by Officer James Keith “Jay” Steward on Hawk Pride Mountain Road in Colbert County, Alabama. Hinton was walking along the road when Steward struck him. Hinton was pronounced dead at the scene. Steward was seriously injured and airlifted to Huntsville Hospital.

The subsequent criminal investigation determined that Steward was driving more than 90 mph and was under the influence when he struck Hinton. Prosecutors alleged in the original indictment that Steward recklessly caused Hinton's death while under the influence of a controlled substance, speeding and/or operating the police vehicle on the wrong side of the roadway.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency investigated the fatal collision. The Colbert County District Attorney's Office later turned the case over to the Alabama Attorney General's Office, which handled the prosecution.

In March 2023, Steward was indicted for reckless murder. He initially pleaded not guilty. In August 2024, Steward instead pleaded guilty to manslaughter, admitting criminal responsibility for killing Hinton while driving under the influence.

On 10/08/2024, a Colbert County judge sentenced Steward to 20 years in prison. Steward subsequently sought to have his sentence modified and asked to serve it in a county jail rather than state prison, but the state opposed the request.

James Keith “Jay” Steward was 34 and a Tuscumbia Police Department officer when he killed Hinton. He was driving a marked department vehicle. By the time of his March 2023 indictment, Steward was described as a former Tuscumbia police officer. He was indicted for reckless murder, ultimately pleaded guilty to manslaughter in August 2024, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison in October 2024.

On 10/08/2022, an unidentified driver was killed after crashing during a San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office pursuit in east Stockton. The encounter began shortly before 2:30 a.m. near North Filbert and Myrtle streets.

San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office patrol deputies initiated a traffic stop, but the driver continued away at high speed. Deputies pursued the vehicle. Approximately one minute after the attempted traffic stop began, the driver crashed into an unoccupied parked vehicle near Filbert Street and Harding Way.

Emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The parked vehicle was unoccupied and no other people were injured.

On 10/08/2022, 35-year-old Lamar Stegall of Atlanta was killed when his Ford Fusion crashed during a Georgia State Patrol pursuit that began in Clayton County and continued into Fulton County.

Shortly before 7:00 p.m., Georgia State Patrol troopers observed Stegall traveling north on I-75 near I-285. Troopers alleged that he was speeding and failed to use a turn signal and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Stegall continued driving and troopers initiated a pursuit.

The pursuit continued north into Fulton County. As Stegall attempted to exit I-75 onto Arthur B. Langford Jr. Parkway, his Ford left the exit ramp, struck an embankment and overturned back onto the roadway. Stegall died from his injuries.

Georgia State Police troopers were patrolling I-75 in Clayton County when a Ford Fusion was seen speeding and not using a turn signal. Troopers escalated a chase and the Fusion fled. Troopers continued chasing the vehicle at high speeds into Fulton County when the took an exit ramp onto State Route 166. As he was entering the ramp, the vehicle drove off the road and went down and embankment where it ultimately flipped over, killing the driver. The man’s identity was not released, nor were dashcam videos or other evidence.
