On 07/15/2022, 52-year-old Darren Wesley Shull was killed when Carbon County Sheriff's Sgt. Kelly Carrington struck him with a sheriff's patrol vehicle on U.S. Highway 212 near Roberts, Montana. Shull, a former firefighter-paramedic, had stopped to help motorcyclist Jesse Beck after Beck crashed. Carrington's vehicle struck and killed both men.
.
Carrington was responding to the reported motorcycle crash when he struck Shull and Beck, who were in the southbound lane of Highway 212. After striking the men, Carrington lost control of the patrol vehicle, which left the roadway and came to rest in a ditch. Both Shull and Beck were pronounced dead at the scene.
.
The incident was captured by two video recording devices. Carrington was placed on administrative leave while the Montana Highway Patrol and Montana Division of Criminal Investigation investigated. The Yellowstone County Sheriff's Office also participated in the outside investigation, and an independent coroner was brought in to avoid a conflict of interest.
.
A coroner's inquest was held in June 2023 to determine whether Carrington could face criminal charges for the deaths. An eight-person jury ultimately determined that Carrington should not face criminal charges.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
Sgt. Kelly Carrington had 16 years of law-enforcement experience at the time of the crash, including 11 years with the Carbon County Sheriff's Office. He was placed on paid administrative leave following the deaths while the outside investigation was conducted.

Kelly Carrington struck him with a patrol vehicle on U.S. Highway 212 near mile marker 82 outside Roberts, Montana. Darren Shull, 52, who had stopped to help Beck following Beck's motorcycle crash, was also struck and killed. Both men died at the scene.

Carrington was dispatched to the motorcycle crash and drove southbound on Highway 212 toward the scene. Evidence presented during the subsequent coroner's inquest showed that Carrington was traveling approximately 110–115 mph as he approached. Carrington testified that lights near the crash scene temporarily blinded him before his patrol vehicle struck Beck and Shull. He initially believed he had struck a deer. His Dodge Charger then left the highway and crashed into a ditch.
.
The collision was captured by Carrington's dash camera and body-worn camera. Investigators from the Montana Highway Patrol, Montana Division of Criminal Investigation and other outside agencies investigated the deaths. Carrington was placed on paid administrative leave following the collision.
.
A coroner's inquest was held in June 2023. Evidence concerning Carrington's speed, visibility, dispatch information and his understanding of the crash location was presented to an eight-person jury. The jury determined that Carrington should not face criminal charges, and Carbon County Attorney Alex Nixon subsequently said he would follow that recommendation.

Age :33
Gender :Male
Race : Unknown
Date : 07/06/2022

City : Lakewood
County : Pierce
State : Washington
Agency : Lakewood Police Department; Milton Police Department
Officer(s) : Not Disclosed
Cause of Death : Vehicle
Event : Bystander killed by police chase crash
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
REASON FOR CHASE: Bystander killed during a pursuit connected to a Milton Police Department investigation of a road-rage incident involving a firearm. Lakewood police located the SUV associated with the investigation, and a Lakewood K-9 officer followed it while waiting for backup. Driver Jamshid Foster Aflatooni then fled into a residential neighborhood.
.
NARRATIVE:
On 07/06/2022, 33-year-old Ian David Geiger of Lakewood was fatally injured when an SUV fleeing Lakewood police struck him in the driveway of his home in a residential neighborhood near State Route 512 and South Tacoma Way.
.
Milton police had been investigating a road-rage incident involving a firearm. Lakewood police subsequently located an SUV associated with that investigation. A Lakewood Police Department K-9 unit followed the SUV while waiting for additional officers.
.
Driver Jamshid Foster Aflatooni fled into the residential neighborhood. A short time later, Aflatooni reversed his SUV and rammed the Lakewood police vehicle twice.
.
Geiger and his wife were inside their home when they heard the commotion. They looked outside and saw the SUV speeding and spinning its tires with police behind it. Geiger told his wife to move back, retrieved a shotgun and went outside.
.
Prosecutors determined that Aflatooni drove toward Geiger at approximately 47–57 mph. The SUV struck Geiger, throwing him over his parked vehicle and pinning him against the garage door. Geiger fired two shots into the SUV's grille as he was struck.
.
Geiger suffered severe internal bleeding and other traumatic injuries. He was transported to Madigan Army Medical Center and died from his injuries the following morning. His obituary records his full name as Ian David Geiger, born 06/09/1989 and died 07/07/2022.
.
Aflatooni was initially charged with second-degree murder, three counts of second-degree assault and attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle. His competency became an issue early in the criminal case, and psychological evaluations concluded that he was experiencing severe mental health problems at the time of the crash.
.
Aflatooni ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter. The murder, assault and attempting-to-elude charges were dismissed under the plea agreement. Prosecutors sought a sentence of two years and three months, but the judge imposed an exceptional sentence of 77 days, time served, and Aflatooni received no additional jail time.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Lakewood Police Department did not publicly identify the K-9 officer who initially followed Aflatooni's SUV or the other officers involved in the police response in the sources located.

County : Chatham
State : Georgia
Agency : Savannah Police Department
Officer(s) : David Bates
Cause of Death : Vehicle
Event : Passenger killed by police chase crash
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
REASON FOR CHASE: Passenger killed during a pursuit initiated after Savannah Police Corporal David Bates observed a pickup truck traveling without headlights and taillights. Bates activated his emergency lights and siren and followed the truck after driver Kasey Mark Sanderson continued away.
.
NARRATIVE:
On 07/05/2022, 28-year-old Angela Sanderson was killed while riding as a passenger in a pickup truck driven by Kasey Mark Sanderson during a Savannah Police Department pursuit.
.
At approximately 1 a.m., Savannah Police Corporal David Bates observed the pickup traveling without its headlights and taillights illuminated. Bates attempted a traffic stop, but Kasey Sanderson continued driving.
.
Bates followed the pickup with his patrol vehicle's emergency lights and siren activated. The pursuit continued toward the heavily traveled intersection of Abercorn Street and East DeRenne Avenue.
.
Kasey Sanderson entered the intersection against a red light and collided with another vehicle. The pickup caught fire following the collision.
.
Angela Sanderson suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Savannah firefighters pulled Kasey Sanderson from the burning pickup. Another driver was injured, and a person outside a vehicle was also struck and injured during the collision.
.
The Savannah Police Department subsequently determined that Bates violated department pursuit policy. The department concluded that the underlying offense did not justify continuing a vehicle pursuit and that Bates had opportunities to discontinue the pursuit and allow the Georgia State Patrol to attempt to locate the truck. Bates was also found to have failed to activate his body-worn camera as required.
.
Bates was initially suspended for 10 days. Following review of the disciplinary action, his suspension was increased to 20 days. Bates challenged the discipline, arguing that he was attempting to conduct a traffic stop rather than engaging in a pursuit and that he had reduced his speed and increased his distance from Sanderson's truck. Savannah Police maintained that his actions constituted a pursuit and violated policy.
.
Kasey Sanderson was subsequently indicted on charges including felony murder, homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle, DUI and fleeing. In 2024, he was convicted of first-degree homicide by vehicle, serious injury by vehicle and DUI and sentenced to 25 years, with 10 years to be served in prison.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
Savannah Police Corporal David Bates was identified as the officer who initiated and continued following the pickup. Savannah Police determined that Bates violated the department's vehicle-pursuit policy and body-camera policy. His disciplinary suspension was ultimately increased to 20 days. Bates remained employed by the Savannah Police Department following the incident.

County : Wilkinson
State : Mississippi
Agency : Mississippi Highway Patrol
Officer(s) : Not Disclosed
Cause of Death : Vehicle
Event : Driver killed in FARS police-related roadway fatality; exact police involvement not publicly confirmed
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
REASON FOR CHASE: No police pursuit or attempted traffic stop has been established. Contemporary reporting states that Veal was driving west on Highway 24 when he lost control of his vehicle and struck an embankment. The reason FARS coded the crash as police-related remains unresolved.
.
NARRATIVE:
On 07/02/2022, 16-year-old Daquan Veal of Woodville was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 24 in Wilkinson County, Mississippi.
.
Veal was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu west on Highway 24 when he lost control of the vehicle. The Malibu left the roadway and collided with an embankment.
.
Veal suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Mississippi Highway Patrol investigated the crash.
.
The crash occurred during the Mississippi Highway Patrol's 2022 Independence Day Holiday Travel Enforcement Period. MHP subsequently reported that Veal's death was the only fatality on Mississippi state highways during that holiday enforcement period.
.
No public source located states that a trooper was pursuing Veal, had attempted to stop him, was following him, had activated emergency equipment, or had made contact with his vehicle before the crash. Mississippi Highway Patrol's involvement documented in the available reporting is as the agency investigating the fatal collision.
.
The police-related FARS designation therefore remains unexplained and requires review of the underlying FARS police-related variables or original crash report before any police-triggered event can be established.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
No law-enforcement officer has been identified as initiating or participating in police action preceding Veal's crash.
