On April 18, 2025, Sacramento police responded to reports of a man with a firearm at a residence on the 4400 block of 71st Street in the Colonial Manor neighborhood. Officers arrived and heard at least one gunshot from inside the home. Police escalated a six-hour standoff, during which the man, 44-year-old Manfred Schield, eventually surrendered peacefully. Inside the home, officers found 64-year-old Cynthia Torres and 68-year-old Nicholas William Pontliana dead from gunshot wounds.

On April 17, 2025, at approximately 9:15 p.m., Newport Beach police conducted a traffic stop on a motorcyclist along Pacific Coast Highway near Superior Avenue. Police engaged him in an altercation. The man, 45-year-old Geoffrey Shyam Stirling of Laguna Niguel, allegedly attempted to use the officer's taser. An officer opened fire, striking Stirling. He was transported to Hoag Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured. The California Department of Justice is conducting an independent investigation under AB 1506.

Geoffrey Shyam Stirling, who was fatally shot by police during a traffic stop in Newport Beach, California, on April 17, 2025, was the younger brother of Lydia McLaughlin. Lydia is known for her appearances on The Real Housewives of Orange County during seasons 8 and 12. She publicly mourned her brother's passing, describing it as an “unimaginable loss” and expressing that her family's hearts are shattered. ​

In addition to Lydia, Geoffrey is survived by his older brother, Jesse Stirling, who hosts the interview program Meetings with Remarkable People on Newfoundland Television (NTV). Their father, Scott Stirling, is the CEO of the Newfoundland Broadcasting Company, a media enterprise co-founded by Geoffrey's grandfather, the late media magnate Geoff Stirling. ​

On 04/16/2025 at approximately 7:45 p.m., Anaheim Police responded to a shooting at the Kona Motel on North Brookhurst Street where a man was shot in the stomach. Officers identified Danny Lee Cuelho, 51, as the driver of a white Chevrolet Silverado and began a pursuit lasting about 45 minutes at high speeds through freeways and surface streets. Multiple PIT maneuvers were attempted before the final successful PIT near the 1400 block of West Memory Lane in Santa Ana, where the vehicle crashed and caught fire. Eight Anaheim officers opened fire after Cuelho refused to exit and was believed to be armed. A handgun was recovered from the vehicle. Cuelho died at the scene despite CPR attempts. A passenger exited safely and was later released.

On April 15, 2025, around 1:40 a.m., Gardena police attempted a traffic stop for speeding. The woman driving the vehicle did not stop. Police chased the vehicle to a strip mall parking lot at Rosecrans Avenue and Van Ness Avenue and used a PIT maneuver to end the pursuit. Officers said the woman pulled out a handgun, and three officers opened fire, killing her at the scene.

On April 14, 2025, San Diego police responded to a report of a man with a rifle partially concealed in his jacket near Sanger Place and Blanche Street in San Ysidro. The man, later identified as Enrique Cortez Jr., placed the rifle into a white Ford F-150 pickup truck, retrieved a handgun, and fired a shot into the ground during an argument with a bicyclist.

When officers arrived, Cortez entered the truck and drove away, leading police on a pursuit that lasted over 30 minutes, involving Interstate 5, Interstate 15, and surface streets. The chase concluded in the 800 block of 26th Street in the Golden Hill neighborhood, where Cortez's vehicle collided with a police K-9 unit, causing minor injuries to an officer.As officers attempted to box in the vehicle, Cortez revved the engine. In response, SDPD SWAT officers Sgt. Richard Curtis and Acting Sgt. Bryan Shields fired multiple rounds, striking Cortez. Officers removed him from the vehicle and initiated lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A rifle and a handgun were recovered from the truck.
The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is leading the investigation into the shooting, with oversight from the District Attorney's Office and the FBI.

On April 13, 2025, California Highway Patrol officers attempted to stop a vehicle in connection with street racing. The chase escalated, exceeding 100 miles an hour, and continued onto the westbound Riverside 91 Freeway. It ended when the vehicle collided when chased the wrong way with a semi truck near Lincoln Avenue. The impact caused the semi to crash into a wall and ejected the driver, 55-year-old Stephen Palacios of Rancho Cucamonga. Palacios was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead. A passenger in Palacios’ vehicle also sustained moderate injuries.

On April 10, 2025, Fresno Police responded to a report of a woman holding a knife to a bystander at the FAX Transit Center near Blackstone and Shields Avenues. Officers encountered 39-year-old Joanna Lopez, who refused to drop the weapon. An officer fired one round, striking Lopez in the head. She was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The bystander was unharmed. Authorities noted that Lopez had expressed suicidal thoughts prior to the incident. The officer involved has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending investigation.

On April 8, 2025, Huntington Park police responded to reports of a man setting a fire at Salt Lake Park. Officer fired a Taser, and then, claiming that he continued to advance, opened fire. Cabrales was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On April 7, 2025, around 6:00 a.m., Fresno police responded to a report of a stabbing at a residence on Weber Avenue. Officers located a man in his 60s with multiple stab wounds. He was transported to the hospital and survived. The individual responsible for the stabbing, a man in his 40s, barricaded himself inside the home. A standoff followed. Around 4:30 p.m., officers entered and found the man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident remains under investigation.

On April 7, 2025, at approximately 9:00 a.m., San Joaquin County Sheriff's deputies responded to Eastside Community Park in Garden Acres, California, following complaints of illegal dumping. They encountered 41-year-old Gregory Fitzgerald and a female companion near a vehicle with expired registration. Deputies observed what appeared to be a rifle in the vehicle, which the woman identified as a pellet gun.
When deputies attempted to detain Fitzgerald, he fled on foot, leading to a pursuit that culminated in Fitzgerald climbing onto the roof of a residence on East Ardelle Avenue. Over a two-hour standoff, Fitzgerald repeatedly claimed to be armed and threatened to shoot deputies. At approximately 11:14 a.m., Fitzgerald allegedly raised a black object towards deputies.
A SWAT operator and two deputies opened fire, striking Fitzgerald. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No firearm was recovered at the scene; the object Fitzgerald pointed was later identified as a non-lethal item.
The California Department of Justice is investigating the incident under Assembly Bill 1506, which mandates state-level review of officer-involved shootings resulting in the death of unarmed individuals.

On April 6, 2025, San Bernardino police responded to a 911 call from a teenage boy reporting that his father was trying to stab him. Officers arrived at a home on the 100 block of West 17th Street and located the father inside the residence. Officers said the man was armed with a knife and experiencing a mental health crisis. Police opened fire and killed him. The son was not physically injured. The man's identity has not been released.

On March 29, 2025, at approximately 9:40 p.m., Clovis Police officers attempted to stop a Dodge Charger near Temperance and Gettysburg Avenues after observing reckless driving. The 18-year-old driver, Luis Felix, fled southbound on Temperance Avenue, initiating a pursuit. At the intersection of Temperance and Belmont Avenues, the Charger clipped a Toyota Camry stopped at a stop sign, causing the Camry to spin. The Charger then collided with an oncoming Chevrolet Tahoe. Two 19-year-old male passengers in the Charger were pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies and SWAT units arrived, leading to a standoff. Just before 10 p.m., the man allegedly shot towards deputies, who returned fire. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

On 03/28/2025, Los Angeles police attempted to stop a burgundy SUV suspected of DUI in the Southwest Division. The driver, 15-year-old Glendon Robateau, refused to stop, and police escalated a chase through the Westchester neighborhood. Officers disengaged after the SUV reached extreme speeds, but minutes later it ran a red light at Sepulveda Boulevard and Century Boulevard and collided with a compact Honda sedan. Robateau was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers, ages 19 and 22, along with the Honda’s driver, sustained injuries. The LAPD South Traffic Division and Multi-Disciplinary Collision Investigation Team are investigating.

A juvenile male died on March 28, 2025, after a high-speed crash in Los Angeles. LAPD officers attempted a traffic stop on a burgundy SUV suspected of DUI. The SUV fled and police briefly pursued before terminating due to safety concerns. Moments later, the SUV ran a red light at Century Boulevard and Sepulveda Boulevard, struck a Honda sedan, then slammed into a traffic pole. The driver was killed on impact. Marin County Sheriff's deputies attempted to stop a driver for reckless driving in San Rafael. The driver refused to stop. Police escalated a pursuit, during which the man lost control of the vehicle near Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Greenfield Avenue and crashed into a tree. He was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. No other vehicles were involved and no additional injuries were reported.

Police escalated a chase until the vehicle exited Highway 4 and ran a red light at East Leland Road and Gladstone Drive, crashing into another vehicle. A female passenger in the other car was killed, and her fiancé was critically injured. The driver of the fleeing vehicle died at the scene.

Ontario police attempted to stop a stolen silver Audi. The driver refused to stop. Officers escalated a chase from Ontario into Chino. Clarissa Cano, a 27-year-old mother of a 5-year-old daughter, had just left home to visit her grandmother when the driver ran a red light and slammed into her red car at high speed, pushing both vehicles through a wall. Cano was killed in the crash. She had been caring for her younger siblings after the death of their mother. Her death occurred on her birthday. The driver was arrested and charged with multiple crimes including vehicular manslaughter.

On March 26, 2025, San Diego Police responded to reports of a man pointing a gun at pest control and construction workers in the Scripps Ranch neighborhood. Officers arrived at the 11600 block of Angelique Street and ordered the man to drop his weapon. The 59-year-old male allegedly advanced toward officers while holding a semi-automatic pistol. SWAT officers opened fire and killed him. A knife was also found in his possession. No officers or civilians were injured.

On March 26, 2025, multiple law enforcement agencies executed a drug-related search warrant at a home on Kestrel Court in Olivehurst. During the operation, a man inside the residence exchanged gunfire with officers. Marysville Police Officer Osmar Rodarte was shot and later died at a hospital. Officers returned fire and killed the man inside the home. Rodarte was a two-year veteran of the department and a U.S. Army veteran. The Yuba County and Sutter County District Attorney’s Offices are investigating.

South Gate police located a man in a vehicle near Seville Avenue and Walnut Street wanted for two recent armed robberies. Officers approached and the man allegedly raised a gun. Around 7:40 a.m. on March 23, 2025, a juvenile called 911 reporting her mother was being assaulted and kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend, who was armed. The man forced the woman into a Mercedes sedan and drove away from an apartment complex on Oro Vista Road. Officers from the San Diego Police Department pursued the vehicle and deployed spike strips on Tocayo Avenue. After the vehicle stopped, the woman escaped. The man then shot and killed himself in the vehicle as police surrounded the scene.

On March 23, 2025, around 2:00 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers pursued a stolen vehicle traveling over 100 miles per hour on Highway 4 in Pittsburg. The driver exited at Railroad Avenue and crashed into a blue SUV that was not involved in the chase. Villamalia Polina Tu'ipulotu, 23, was a passenger in the SUV and died in the collision. Her fiancé, who was driving the SUV, and the driver were transported to a hospital. The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the fatal crash.

On March 21, 2025, a resident in the 100 block of Walnut Street in Needles reported a vehicle burglary in progress. Deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department responded and found 39-year-old Michael Ray Richard II walking nearby. Richard fled on foot, evading capture by jumping over walls before returning to retrieve a bag. Deputies caught up with him and a struggle ensued. Richard, armed with a handgun, fired during the struggle, prompting deputies to open fire. He was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. A second firearm was found in his bag. One deputy sustained minor injuries.

On 03/17/2025, at approximately 1:00 p.m., Modesto police officers attempted to arrest 40-year-old Jimmy Lee Rupe, who had multiple felony warrants for lewd acts with a child and firearm-related charges. The incident occurred near the 3200 block of Dale Road, close to the Vintage Faire Mall. During the encounter, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Rupe was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. More than 100 bullets were fired in the store during arrest. The investigation is ongoing.

On March 17, 2025, 28-year-old Robert "Bob" Halmayr of Glen Ellen was driving a silver Toyota Camry northbound on Farmer’s Lane in Santa Rosa when he was struck by a gray Nissan Maxima driven by Aaron Rodriguez Hernandez, 21. Hernandez was being monitored by police who had earlier observed him speeding. Although police stated they did not maintain continuous visual contact and were not in a position to conduct a stop, they saw the Maxima again shortly before the crash. The collision occurred at Montgomery Drive and Farmer’s Lane, pushing both vehicles into a nearby parking lot. Halmayr was pronounced dead at the scene. Hernandez was arrested and faces charges including vehicular manslaughter, DUI drugs with injury, and violation of probation.

On March 14, 2025, at approximately 10:20 p.m., Los Angeles Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop near Imperial Highway and Broadway in South Los Angeles after observing a vehicle being driven erratically. The object Sanchez pointed at the officers was later determined to be a cellphone. His family states that he had been shot more than 30 times.

Family's Response:
Following the incident, Sanchez's family and community members gathered outside the Southeast Los Angeles Police Department Station to protest the shooting, holding signs that read "A cellphone is not a gun" and "Justice for Mario Sanchez." His sister, Evelyn Sanchez, stated that her brother had texted her at 10:20 p.m., informing her he had been pulled over by the LAPD, and was killed within minutes of that message. She described Mario as a forklift driver and father of two, demanding accountability for the officers involved.

Investigation:
The California Department of Justice is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting, as mandated by AB 1506, which requires such reviews when an unarmed civilian is killed by law enforcement.

On March 8, 2025, at approximately 6:49 p.m., Ariona "Ari" Jackson, 33, of Victorville, was involved in an alleged retail shoplifting incident at the Tractor Supply store in Apple Valley, California. After store personnel recovered the items, Jackson left on foot southbound across Bear Valley Road near Savage Lane, running across all lanes of traffic. She was struck by a Mazda 6 sedan driven by a 20-year-old woman from Apple Valley. Emergency responders transported Jackson to a local hospital, and she was later airlifted to a trauma center, where she died from her injuries. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department's Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the incident.
