On March 17, 2025, 28-year-old Robert "Bob" Halmayr of Glen Ellen was driving a silver Toyota Camry northbound on Farmer’s Lane in Santa Rosa when he was struck by a gray Nissan Maxima driven by Aaron Rodriguez Hernandez, 21. Hernandez was being monitored by police who had earlier observed him speeding. Although police stated they did not maintain continuous visual contact and were not in a position to conduct a stop, they saw the Maxima again shortly before the crash. The collision occurred at Montgomery Drive and Farmer’s Lane, pushing both vehicles into a nearby parking lot. Halmayr was pronounced dead at the scene. Hernandez was arrested and faces charges including vehicular manslaughter, DUI drugs with injury, and violation of probation.

Following the incident, Sanchez's family and community members gathered outside the Southeast Los Angeles Police Department Station to protest the shooting, holding signs that read "A cellphone is not a gun" and "Justice for Mario Sanchez." His sister, Evelyn Sanchez, stated that her brother had texted her at 10:20 p.m., informing her he had been pulled over by the LAPD, and was killed within minutes of that message. She described Mario as a forklift driver and father of two, demanding accountability for the officers involved.

Investigation:
The California Department of Justice is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting, as mandated by AB 1506, which requires such reviews when an unarmed civilian is killed by law enforcement.

On February 1, 2025, Elk Grove police attempted to stop a Ford Explorer with no license plates near Auberry Drive and Spengler Drive. On February 1, 2025, around 4 a.m., Sgt. Carlos Gonzalo Coronel, 40, of Buena Park, allegedly struck and killed 19 year old Imanol Salvador Gonzalez, who was walking in the street near Nisson Road and Del Amo Avenue. Coronel fled the scene in his Chevrolet Silverado, later reportedly instructed his girlfriend to avoid returning to the crash site, and conducted online searches about fatal hit-and-run incidents before returning near the scene.
Coronel was charged with one felony count of DUI causing great bodily injury, one felony count of hit-and-run causing death, and a felony enhancement for great bodily injury. He faces up to six years and eight months in prison. He reportedly had a prior DUI conviction in 2011 and probation violations

On 01/27/2025, around 8:40 p.m., Hanford police stopped Richard Saunders on Irwin Court for riding a bicycle without a light. Officer Brian Scandura handcuffed Saunders and ordered him to sit down. When Saunders did not comply, Scandura forced him to the ground, causing his head to strike the pavement. Saunders became non-verbal, began bleeding from the head, and lost consciousness. He was transported to a hospital where he remained unconscious for 17 days before dying from his injuries. A grand jury indicted Scandura on charges including involuntary manslaughter, assault causing injury, assault by a public officer, and battery causing serious bodily injury.

On the evening of January 25, 2025, at approximately 8:15 p.m., San Diego Police Department officers responded to a disturbance at the Star Bar located at 423 E Street in the Gaslamp Quarter. The individual involved, identified as 40-year-old Gabriel Jesus Garza, was reportedly causing a disturbance inside the bar and had allegedly assaulted a security guard. Upon arrival, officers found Garza being restrained on the ground by the security guard and another individual. Officers handcuffed Garza, who continued to struggle, and requested medical assistance. Paramedics arrived and discovered that Garza was unresponsive and without a pulse. Despite resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit is leading the investigation, with a review to be conducted by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office to assess any potential criminal liability of the officers involved.

On January 24, 2025, Fountain Valley Police officers responded to reports of a man attempting to open vehicles, including an occupied vehicle, on Mateo Street in Fountain Valley, California. When officers arrived, the man allegedly entered a police vehicle with a gun. Officers opened fire, and the man was pronounced dead on site. The Fountain Valley Police Department is handling the case and conducting an internal investigation.

On 01/22/2025, 50-year-old James John Cattani, driving a white GMC Sierra, did not stop for California Highway Patrol. Police escalated a chase near Arvin, where he lost control and struck a dirt embankment. He was transported to Kern Medical with major injuries and died the following evening.
