On 09/16/2025, Wilmington Police attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle with a driver who had outstanding warrants. The driver refused to stop, and police escalated a chase northbound on Interstate 95. Delaware State Police joined the pursuit. The vehicle exited at Marsh Road, lost control near Edgemoor Road, struck a utility pole and fence, and left the roadway. A 4-month-old boy, Maurice Brown, Jr., was ejected from the vehicle and transported to Nemours Children’s Hospital, where he died. The driver was critically injured, and two other passengers, a 32-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl, sustained serious injuries.

On 09/06/2025, around 11 p.m., Delaware State Police attempted a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Silverado in Blades for an expired registration. Instead of stopping, police escalated a high-speed chase as the driver crossed into oncoming lanes on Market Street. The Silverado collided head-on with a Ford F-150 in the turn lane, forcing it backward into a Chevrolet Camaro. The 58-year-old male driver of the Silverado, who was not restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Ford driver, 34, of Laurel, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, while the Camaro driver, 20, of Delmar, declined treatment. Market Street was closed for nearly five hours while police investigated the fatal crash.

Police responded to a welfare check and found Jason Arnold had left the area. A Millsboro officer attempted a traffic stop, but Arnold continued driving. After stopping at a residence on Blackwood Drive, Arnold exited the vehicle with a firearm and fired at police. A trooper and an officer returned fire, injuring him. Arnold barricaded himself inside the home. Hours later, police entered and found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A 69-year-old woman nearby sustained minor injuries during the incident. The Delaware Department of Justice is investigating.

Delaware State Police responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence on W Springside Drive. Upon arrival, troopers encountered 44-year-old Gregory Painter, who allegedly charged at them with a knife. Troopers opened fire, fatally shooting him. Authorities stated that Painter refused verbal commands and advanced aggressively. The Delaware Division of Forensic Science will conduct an autopsy, and an investigation by the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit is ongoing.

Marina Vasconcelos, a 24-year-old doctoral student at the University of Delaware, was killed when Gordon Turner, 22, drove away at high speed from Newark Police in an overdue-for-return U-Haul van. As officers approached the van parked on East Main Street, Turner drove over a curb, hit a police vehicle, and sped away. Police claim that they did not chase but the crash reportedly occurred as part of a failed police traffic stop. Moments later, Turner lost control of the vehicle, striking Vasconcelos and seriously injuring another graduate student, before colliding with multiple parked cars and causing additional injuries. Turner was charged with second-degree murder and multiple other offenses, held on a $305,500 cash bond.

On August 28, 2024, the University of Delaware Police Department escalated a pursuit of a motorcycle that refused to stop for police, causing the motorcycle to lose control and strike Noelia Gomez, an 18-year-old University of Delaware student, as she crossed East Main Street near North College Avenue. Gomez was killed upon impact. Four additional pedestrians were also struck, though their conditions remain unknown.

On August 4, 2024, Francisco Vasquez, 57, entered the home of his ex-wife, Alondra Quinonez, on Limestone Road in Wilmington, Delaware, and shot her, killing her. He then set the house on fire and fled the scene. After the shooting, law enforcement discovered Quinonez's body and worked quickly to track Vasquez.

Delaware State Police located Vasquez near the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal after a pursuit. He was seen on an electrical tower, armed and refusing to surrender. After several hours of attempted negotiation, Vasquez fired at police officers, prompting them to return fire. Vasquez was shot and killed at the scene.

Vasquez had a history of domestic violence, and this incident tragically took the life of Quinonez and disrupted the lives of her family. The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit is leading the investigation into this case.

On June 4, 2024, Arnold Azamar, 51, visited a female relative at the Kent Assisted Living Facility. He was asked to leave by staff, and as he was escorted out, he shot and killed staff member William Whitehead. Azamar then fled the scene, and Delaware State Police, assisted by officers from multiple departments, located him near the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.

Azamar, armed and refusing to surrender, was approached by police. After a standoff, he fired at officers, prompting them to return fire, killing him at the scene.

An unknown number of officers and agents from US Marshals, Maryland State police and Greenwood PD stormed a small camper where Brian Holben was located. After an unknown standoff, he was found dead from self-inflicted gunshot wound. No transparency has been afforded to the public why this large multi-agency search warrant and targeting of the camper was undertaken.

A man forced his way into an apartment with a gun but fled before police arrived. The same man was reported shortly thereafter to force his way into a grain elevator and feed mill where he worked. He again had a gun and said this was his last day and again left. In both appearances at the home and the business, he had not hurt anyone and from the description of behavior seemed to be in some sort of mental health crisis. Police found him walking in a field. An altercation took place and police allege that he fired a shot at them. Police fired several shots back and he fled. He was later found dead with a bullet in his head and a shell casing next to him. Police allege that it was self-inflicted but this is unconfirmed at this time.

New Castle deputies and SWAT were called to a home where a man was holding 2 people hostage. When police arrived, the 34-year-old still unnamed man shot and killed the woman and injured the other man. When SWAT made forcible entry, they used flashbangs and robots, fired on the man. He was later found dead from gunshot wounds. Police speculate that their bullet or his own may have killed him but have not determined this so far.

Delaware State Police saw Tremaine Jackson who allegedly left the store with stolen merchandise. A DSP trooper tried to stop him from leaving and hung on to his car, getting stuck between the door and the guard rail of the parking lot. The trooper shot and killed him.

On 03/07/2023, outside of a 7-Eleven on the 200 block of Maryland Avenue in Richardson Park, one unnamed New Castle County police officer opened fire in the parking lot, shooting a man and woman believed to be in their 20s. The man named Andrew Edelmann died. The condition of the woman is unknown. Police were in the area of Maryland Avenue and W. Champlain Avenue conducting a drug investigation. Police did not explain why they shot the two. Police were in an unmarked pickup truck and did not answer whether the detective who fired the shots had been an undercover agent. It is unknown why police felt threatened by Edelmann.

Delaware State Police troopers were dispatched to a report of a "suspicious person with a gun" and chased Wiseman to an area near Route 141, where a shootout began during which a bus carrying high school students was hit three times. One of the bullets entered the school bus while another was lodged in the seventh-row window where a student was sitting. Wiseman ran onto Route 141 and carjacked one person before fleeing down I-95 south toward Newark. That triggered additional shootouts at several locations, as well as another carjacking, over a period of about an hour. Delaware State Police finally stopped Wiseman's car near Route 896 and police engaged him gunfire, killing him.

Delaware State Police say a trooper observed a car driving recklessly on Vines Creek Road west of Powell Farm Road and attempted a traffic stop. Police say the trooper chased the car while it ignored emergency lights and sirens, continuing to drive recklessly at high speeds. When the car reached the intersection of Roxana Road and Pyle Center Road, he collided with a tractor trailer, who had a green light. The vehicle crashed into the rear of the tractor trailer, lodging itself underneath. The trailer dragged the car a short distance before stopping.Phillip Bratton died on the scene.

Rodney Robinson was allegedly seen with a gun leaving a restaurant. Police searched him, could not find a gun and chased him when he returned to the restaurant, shooting and killing him.
