Nathain Jenkins

Age :32

Gender :Male

Race : Black

Date : 08/09/2024

Location : Walgreens store, 2670 Cobb Parkway SE

City : Smyrna

County : Cobb

State : Georgia

Agency : Cobb County Police Department (CCPD)

Officer(s) : Sgt. Adam Roberts

Cause of Death : Gunshot

Event : Killed by police during multi-officer altercation for alleged shoplifting

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On August 9, 2024, at approximately 11:27 p.m., officers from the Cobb County Police Department (CCPD) located 32-year-old Nathain Jenkins inside a Walgreens store at 2670 Cobb Parkway SE in Smyrna, Georgia. Jenkins was wanted on multiple outstanding warrants, including failure to appear on a felon in possession of a firearm charge in Fulton County, as well as probation violations in Lowndes County.
.
Officers entered the Walgreens to apprehend Jenkins. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Jenkins was armed with a handgun during the encounter. An altercation ensued between Jenkins and the officers. During this confrontation, an officer discharged their firearm, striking Jenkins. He was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
.
Jenkins' stepfather, Darlland Jackson, reported that Jenkins had contacted him earlier, stating he was "in trouble" and requesting assistance. Jackson arrived at the Walgreens during the police operation and was on the phone with Jenkins when he heard gunshots. A friend, Hayley Glaze, claimed she was on a FaceTime call with Jenkins during the incident. She alleged that Jenkins had his hands up and informed officers of this before shots were fired.
.
Family members expressed concerns regarding the circumstances of Jenkins' death, particularly questioning the necessity of lethal force if Jenkins' hands were raised. They are seeking clarity and justice in the matter. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting. A handgun allegedly belonging to Jenkins was found at the scene by police.
.
Family and friends held a vigil outside the Walgreens to honor Jenkins' memory and call for a thorough investigation.
.
The officer(s) involved have been placed on administrative leave, following standard protocol, pending the outcome of the investigation. This incident has raised significant concerns within the community, particularly regarding the use of force and the handling of individuals with outstanding warrants.
.
Jenkins’ family, particularly his stepfather Darlland Jackson, strongly contests the police narrative. Jackson has stated that Jenkins called him earlier that evening, saying, “I’m in trouble,” and asking his father to come to the Walgreens to help him. According to Jackson, Jenkins did not sound threatening but rather appeared to want to resolve the situation. Jackson remained on FaceTime with Jenkins throughout the encounter. He claims he did not hear Jenkins make any threatening statements or see him display any weapon. Moments before the gunfire, Jackson alleges he heard officers shouting at Jenkins but insists that his son verbally confirmed his compliance, stating he had his hands up. The call abruptly ended after Jackson heard gunshots.
.
In addition to Jackson’s account, Hayley Glaze, a close friend of Jenkins, has stated that she was on a separate FaceTime call with Jenkins during the standoff. Glaze claims she saw Jenkins raise his hands and verbally inform the officers that he was unarmed, though police assert they recovered a handgun at the scene. Glaze and Jackson both allege that Jenkins was attempting to de-escalate the situation when he was shot.
.
The family has also emphasized Jenkins’ history of mental health struggles, suggesting that his demeanor during the confrontation was more consistent with fear and confusion than aggression. They question why less-lethal methods were not employed to resolve the situation. The family has called for an independent investigation and publicly accused CCPD of overreacting and providing a misleading version of events.
.
Community members, including activists, have echoed the family’s demands for accountability and justice, citing a pattern of excessive force in similar incidents. The family has hired legal representation and plans to pursue further action to challenge the police account and seek justice for Jenkins.

Location : Bibb County Jail

City : Bibb County

County : Bibb

State : Georgia

Agency : Bibb County Sheriff’s Office

Officer(s) : Not Disclosed

Cause of Death : Taser

Event : Died in jail after being tased

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

Stephen Fossett, an inmate in Bibb County Jail, died after an in-custody Tasing incident on May 25, following a medical emergency while he was being treated by jail medical staff. During this emergency, Fossett reportedly became combative, leading a deputy to use a Taser in an attempt to control him. Despite earlier statements from the sheriff's office claiming the Taser had "no effect" on Fossett, the GBI's findings have determined the Tasing contributed to his death.Initially, the Bibb County Sheriff's Office had characterized Fossett’s death as the result of a medical emergency, with no foul play suspected. However, after further investigation and the GBI’s involvement, the sheriff’s office acknowledged the Taser use. Fossett’s family has raised concerns about the transparency of the investigation and has publicly called for more information. They believe that the Tasing was a significant factor in his death, with their legal counsel asserting that Fossett was “brutally tased to death.”
