On May 15, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., off-duty Atlanta Police Officer Koby Minor fatally shot his Lyft driver, 35-year-old Reginald T. Folks, near South Fulton Parkway and Stonewall Tell Road in Union City, Georgia. Officer Minor, who was on unpaid administrative leave due to a prior drug-related arrest, claimed he felt threatened during the ride. He alleged that Folks spoke in a foreign language via the car's Bluetooth system and ignored his requests to stop the vehicle. Believing he was being kidnapped and suspecting an attempt to recruit him into a "gay fraternity," Minor stated that when Folks reached toward the back seat, he discharged his firearm three times, striking Folks in the head. After the shooting, Minor broke a window to exit the vehicle and awaited law enforcement's arrival. Folks was pronounced dead at the scene. On May 14, 2024, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Carroll County Sheriff’s deputies, investigating mail thefts near the 500 block of Little New York Road, attempted to stop 51-year-old Jason Scott Fletcher. When Fletcher refused to stop, deputies escalated the situation by initiating a high-speed pursuit toward Roopville. Deputies called for assistance from the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), and a GSP trooper deployed stop sticks at the intersection of Highway 5 and Banks Circle.

As Fletcher swerved his vehicle toward the trooper in an apparent attempt to strike him, the trooper discharged his firearm, striking Fletcher. Law enforcement transported Fletcher to Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, where he died from his injuries.
