On April 14, 2025, Georgia State Patrol troopers attempted to stop a Chevrolet Equinox for speeding and reckless driving on I-20 East. The troopers pursued the vehicle, which exited onto Moreland Avenue and collided with a car driven by 19-year-old Cooper Schoenke at the intersection with Euclid Avenue in Atlanta's Little Five Points neighborhood. Schoenke, a Drew Charter School graduate, died at the scene. The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of GSP's pursuit policies and calls from community advocates for stricter guidelines to prevent harm to bystanders.
