Chicago PD pulled over a vehicle at a traffic stop and state that a passenger in the backseat opened fire and killed officer Enrique Martinez. Police shot back and killed a different passenger in the vehicle. The shooter flight and was apprehended.

St. Clair deputies were called to a domestic disturbance and found 69-year-old Charles Sanders, armed in his home. He fired his gun several times according to police who shot and killed him.

Chicago PD officers with the Priority Response Team tasked with pursuing robberies were on patrol at about 1:58 a.m. when they saw two people in a black Lexus and for unknown reasons believed they were armed and escalated a chase at high speeds that ended when the vehicle crashed and ejected a passenger who died.

Bystanders report that the car had crashed into an abandoned building that partially collapsed and crushed the car. Blood was reportedly seen nearby. The building was demolished the next day. Nearly 2 weeks after the crash, Chicago PD has not acknowledged the building collapse nor identified the deceased person or substantiated what they were accused of causing the fatal pursuit.

Plano PD were sent to a home in the 3800 block of Pratt Street for a “shots fired” call. Police found Russell Novak, 70, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. His son Nicolas Novak had fled the residence. Police located him and escalated a chase from Plano to Aurora including with helicopters. Police allege that Nicholas Novak stopped the vehicle, got out and pointed a gun at a deputy. A deputy and a Plano officer shot and killed him.

Sangamon County deputies escalated a chase against Kirtis Davenport after report of a burglary at a motorcycle dealership. Police chased him until he crashed. He died several days later in the hospital from injuries.

Springfield PD arrived at the home of Sandra Massey in the 2800 block of Hoover Avenue following a 911 call reporting an intruder. Police arrived, shot her in the head and killed her in her home. Details are not released so far. Illinois State Police have refused to release the bodycam footage and are also not releasing the names of the shooter officers. Massey’s family has retained Ben Crump’s office on her behalf.

Officer Sean Grayson, the shooter, was fired and indicted for her murder when John Milhiser, the Sangamon US Attorney found the shooting to be unjustified.

Update: 07/18/2024: Officer Grayson ordered held without bond. Judge Ryan M. Cadagin denied Grayson pretrial release at a hearing on 07/18/2024 in Springfield. Judge Cadagin described the role of Deputy Grayson in the killing as “such a departure from the expectations of a civil society.” Deputy Grayson had shot Sonya Massey in the face. The deputy had apparently ordered her to move a pot of water, shot her in the face and then discouraged his partner from saving her life once shot.

Peoria County deputies and Canton PD chased several teenagers who were allegedly driving a stolen car that crashed. During the ensuing foot chase, 14-year-old Leron Griffin, a passenger in the vehicle, was last seen running away from a squad car on the shoulder of the I-474. He was found floating dead in the Illinois River, allegedly having drowned while crossing the river.

Chicago PD believed David Curry had hit a woman with a gun on a previous occasion and when they saw him, they began a foot chase. During the foot chase, police allege that he stopped and they accidentally ran into him, knocking him down. COPA released the bodycam which shows the officer violently pushing him and a bystander confronting police, commenting “you did not have to slam him like that.” Curry is seen to lose consciousness with blood pouring from his head. He died from the head injury later in the hospital.

Lake County deputies chased an elderly man in a pickup truck who fled and crashed into the Des Plaines River and died from blunt force trauma of the crash while submerged in water. The reason for the lethal chase was stated as erratic driving.

During a traffic stop in Garfield Park, plainclothes Chicago PD officers with guns drawn walked up to Dexter Reed's vehicle. Police allege that he fired at them but this is not visible on bodycam. Instead, dozens of shots are fired by the couple in civilian clothing who turned out to be Chicago PD officers. The officers fired 96 bullets at Reed in 41 seconds, killing him. It was confirmed later that police profiled and stopped Dexter Reed due to dark window tints.

Macomb Police were called to a home where they allege that they saw blood outside and heard screams from an apartment. Officers made forcible entry and claim that they found Keianna Miller with stab injuries and Anthony George holding a knife to Terrell’s throat. Police opened fire on both and killed both George and the child.

His mother, Keianna Miller, once spoke at a Black Lives Matter event in 2020 and said that she feared local police would one day shoot her and her then-baby son. She explained that she had had previous negative police encounters due to mental health issues and was constantly harassed by police. She related that when she was pregnant in 2019, she ran into a Macomb police officer who asked if she was having a boy or girl. “I can’t wait to arrest your son,” Miller said the officer told her.

On 03/18/2024, the Macomb Police shot and killed her then 4-year-old son Terrell when they fired at a man holding him as human shield and police opened fire on both Anthony George and Terrell whom he held in front of him. The police sniper bullet went through the little boy into his father, killing both.

State prosecutors refused to charge the officers who had not considered Terrell’s life when shooting to kill the hostage-taker. The police chief did not want to answer if and when he would release the bodycam footage in full.

The officers were cleared.
