On 09/20/2025 at approximately 3:30 p.m., Hobart Fire Department paramedics and New Chicago Police responded to a residence at 216 Huber Boulevard after a 911 call reporting a deceased person inside who had died from natural causes of cardiac arrest. While at the residence, 64-year-old Benjamin Scott, the co-owner of the home (also the 911 caller) became agitated with police. Officers requested an ambulance to forcibly take him for a psychological evaluation. Around 4:30 p.m., two New Chicago police officers fired inside the residence for undisclosed reasons, killing Scott. Scott’s death was ruled a homicide (i.e. caused by another) by gunshot. The Lake County Coroner will identify the deceased and conduct an autopsy. The case is under investigation and will be reviewed by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office.

On July 30, 2025, Indiana State Police SWAT, together with South Bend, St. Joseph County, and Indiana University South Bend police officers, executed a drug-related search warrant at a residence on Eldora Court. The subject, Justin Hufkens, initially fled but re-entered the home, leading officers to surround the structure. Hufkens then opened fire on officers, prompting return fire. Over the course of two hours, SWAT utilized an armored vehicle with a battering-ram attachment, which was used to breach doors and windows. Smoke and flash effects were reported by nearby residents during the breach. The surrounding area—including Lincoln Way East—was shut down, residences were cordoned off, and residents were physically pushed back from the perimeter for safety. On the evening of July 14, 2025, a multi-agency unit known as the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force executed a search warrant at an apartment in Indianapolis’s 4500 block of East Washington Street, citing probable cause linking the resident to violent firearms violations. Upon arrival, officers knocked and announced their presence twice, receiving no reply.
Shortly afterward, they heard a gunshot from within the apartment. Officers forced entry, entering through the door under the assumption that someone had been shot. Instead of encountering another victim, they found the individual dead by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A toddler and adult exited safely during the breach.

The Indiana State Police, joined by Crime Scene Investigators, took over the investigation. Everyone on scene was wearing body cameras, but no footage has been publicly released to date.

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On April 14, 2025, Henry County Sheriff's deputies attempted to stop a maroon Dodge Durango driven by Dewuan Hampton for erratic driving on State Road 3 near Indiana Avenue in New Castle. Hampton fled, initiating a pursuit that continued westbound on I-70 through Hancock County and into Marion County. Police chased the vehicle at high speed for more than 40 miles until it crashed into 2 cars. Dewuan Hampton was ejected as the vehicle rolled multiple times. He died on the road at East Washington Street and Mitthoefer Road in Indianapolis. Three passengers in the Durango and the driver of the Mustang were transported to local hospitals with varying injuries. The Indiana State Police are investigating the circumstances of the pursuit and crash.
