On 10/17/2025, Bloomington police arrested 64-year-old Kimberley Eve Martin at Seminary Park on an active warrant confirmed by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. She was transported to the Monroe County Jail and held in the sallyport for transfer. While in custody, she complained of being overheated and became unresponsive. On 10/14/2025, around 12:30 a.m., South Bend police responded to reports of a stabbing at Karl King Apartments. Officers secured the area but were unable to immediately locate a victim. After obtaining a search warrant, they entered an apartment and encountered an armed individual. The person advanced toward officers, who opened fire and shot them. The individual was transported to a hospital and later died. The Mishawaka Police Department and St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the shooting.

On 10/01/2025, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and Indiana State Police engaged in a pursuit on Interstate 65 in Johnson County. The chase ended in a fiery crash that killed one person. On 09/24/2025 at approximately 8:40 p.m., Gary police responded to a domestic battery call at a home on Connecticut Street. A 24-year-old man exited the residence armed with a gun and confronted officers. Police opened fire, and the man was transported to a hospital, where he died. On 09/22/2025, Fort Wayne police responded to a domestic disturbance call at 2100 St. Mary’s Avenue. During the response, a suspect stabbed an officer. Other officers then shot and killed the suspect. The officer who was stabbed was transported to a hospital in serious condition. On 09/22/2025, Lafayette Police arrested Lennis Mitchell, 36, on a domestic battery charge. During the arrest process, Mitchell suffered a medical emergency and collapsed. On 09/20/2025 at approximately 3:30 p.m., Hobart Fire Department paramedics and New Chicago Police responded to a residence at 216 Huber Boulevard after a 911 call reporting a deceased person inside who had died from natural causes of cardiac arrest. While at the residence, 64-year-old Benjamin Scott, the co-owner of the home (also the 911 caller) became agitated with police. Officers requested an ambulance to forcibly take him for a psychological evaluation. Around 4:30 p.m., two New Chicago police officers fired inside the residence for undisclosed reasons, killing Scott. Scott’s death was ruled a homicide (i.e. caused by another) by gunshot. The Lake County Coroner will identify the deceased and conduct an autopsy. The case is under investigation and will be reviewed by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office.

On 09/15/2025, police responded to a shooting in the 600 block of West State Blvd. in Fort Wayne. After witness interviews several hours later, officers found a vehicle believed connected to the shooting and tried to pull the driver over. The driver fled, leading to a 17-minute pursuit. The chase ended near State Road 205 and Madden Road. The vehicle went off the road, and despite commands, the driver did not exit the vehicle. On 09/15/2025, Fort Wayne Police attempted to stop a vehicle connected to a homicide earlier that day in the 2300 block of Cortland Avenue. The driver refused to stop, and police escalated a chase lasting approximately 17 minutes. The vehicle went off the roadway, and the driver was found inside with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital where he died.

On September 3, 2025, around 7:00 a.m., Fort Wayne police attempted to stop an SUV reported stolen earlier that day. The driver, 31-year-old Alexandria Francine Baney, refused to stop. She crashed near the intersection of Lake Avenue and Wyss Road, striking a tree. Baney was trapped in the vehicle, extricated, and taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. The Allen County Coroner ruled the death an accident.

On 08/27/2025 around 2:30 p.m., Decatur County deputies and a Greensburg officer conducted a high-risk traffic stop on a vehicle connected to an earlier Ripley County incident. The stop occurred on County Road 400 East near County Road 300 North. A male passenger, identified as 39-year-old Travis Manlief, exited armed with a gun and pointed it at officers. Deputies and the officer opened fire, striking and killing him. Two other occupants, one male and one female, were detained. No officers were injured. On 08/05/2025 at approximately 3:30 a.m., Alexandria Police initiated pursuit of a vehicle into Anderson. The pursuit vehicle lost control approaching the Roy Y intersection near State Route 507 and Pacific Avenue South and crashed into a Park& Ride lot. Two occupants of the vehicle were killed: Preston Jett (20) died (one at scene, one later at hospital). One occupant was extricated and critically injured. Identification from coroner confirms Jett as one fatality.

On July 30, 2025, Indiana State Police SWAT, together with South Bend, St. Joseph County, and Indiana University South Bend police officers, executed a drug-related search warrant at a residence on Eldora Court. The subject, Justin Hufkens, initially fled but re-entered the home, leading officers to surround the structure. Hufkens then opened fire on officers, prompting return fire. Over the course of two hours, SWAT utilized an armored vehicle with a battering-ram attachment, which was used to breach doors and windows. Smoke and flash effects were reported by nearby residents during the breach. The surrounding area—including Lincoln Way East—was shut down, residences were cordoned off, and residents were physically pushed back from the perimeter for safety. Hufkens continued to fire from within the home. At approximately 3:30 p.m., officers heard a single gunshot from inside. After breaching the structure, SWAT found Hufkens dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, concluding he died by suicide during the standoff under police duress.

On July 21, 2025, Fort Wayne police officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a suicidal man armed with a firearm near the 200 block of West State Boulevard. On the evening of July 14, 2025, a multi-agency unit known as the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force executed a search warrant at an apartment in Indianapolis’s 4500 block of East Washington Street, citing probable cause linking the resident to violent firearms violations. Upon arrival, officers knocked and announced their presence twice, receiving no reply.
Shortly afterward, they heard a gunshot from within the apartment. Officers forced entry, entering through the door under the assumption that someone had been shot. Instead of encountering another victim, they found the individual dead by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A toddler and adult exited safely during the breach.

The Indiana State Police, joined by Crime Scene Investigators, took over the investigation. Everyone on scene was wearing body cameras, but no footage has been publicly released to date.

On June 26, 2025, Dominic Fajardo, 19, was killed in a crash at East First Street and South Georgia Street. Sheridan Police Department and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office had attempted a traffic stop. The driver did not stop and Sheridan officers and Hamilton County deputies escalated a chase that ended at Veteran’s Park near East First & South Georgia Street in Sheridan, Indiana, where Fajardo crashed and died. On 06/10/2025 at approximately 1:20 p.m., officers from the Allen County Drug Task Force attempted to stop a white 2004 Cadillac. The driver did not stop, prompting officers to escalate into an active pursuit northbound on North Clinton Street. At the intersection with East Wallen Road in Fort Wayne, the Cadillac crashed into two other vehicles. Carolyn Hutchinson, a 93-year-old woman, was in one of the vehicles that was struck. She was transported to a local hospital, where she died from her injuries. The second driver, 80-year-old Larry Van Zant, was seriously injured but survived. The Indiana State Police is leading the investigation into the pursuit and crash.

On June 4, approximately 5:00 p.m., Trooper Caleb Cannon of the Indiana State Police attempted a traffic stop near Cory, Indiana. The driver, later identified as Aaron Krout, refused to yield and triggered a low-speed pursuit. Clay County deputies deployed stop sticks, deflating his tires; Trooper Cannon then executed a PIT maneuver, causing Krout’s vehicle to veer into a cornfield and strike the patrol car. Krout exited the vehicle after about an hour, stripped naked, and resisted verbal commands. Deputies extricated and handcuffed him without further incident. Observing signs of controlled substance impairment, officers transported Krout to Terre Haute Regional Hospital. While under medical care, Krout experienced a medical emergency and died. Vigo County Coroner Travis Norris scheduled an autopsy, and the Indiana State Police continues the investigation.

On May 17, 2025, a police pursuit through downtown Terre Haute concluded when the man barricaded himself, leading to a standoff with officers. During the standoff, the man took his own life. The Terre Haute Police Department is investigating the incident.

On May 8, 2025, Chicago Police Department officers attempted to apprehend a man wanted for aggravated battery in the 13400 block of South Baltimore Avenue on the Far South Side of Chicago. The man entered a vehicle and drove away. Officers pursued him across state lines into Hammond, Indiana. The chase ended when the vehicle crashed near Dearborn Avenue and Gostlin Street. As officers approached, the man allegedly fired at them. Officers opened fire and killed him. A firearm was recovered at the scene. COPA is investigating.

On May 5, 2025, 65-year-old Mark Vawter was shot and killed by deputies outside the Hendricks County Courthouse in Danville, Indiana. Vawter, the great-grandfather of two children killed in a February car crash, allegedly opened fire on an inmate transport van. Believing the man charged in the crash, S'Doni Pettis, was inside, Vawter fired at deputies and the vehicle. Deputies returned fire, striking him once. Vawter died at the scene. Pettis was not present, as his hearing had been rescheduled. A gun was recovered at the scene. The Indiana State Police is leading the investigation.

On May 1, 2025, Lafayette police responded to a domestic disturbance at the Cypress Square Apartments on Ravenwood Court. A woman and her juvenile son had requested assistance leaving the residence due to safety concerns. While officers were inside the apartment with the woman and child, Kenneth D. Smith, 55, began firing a weapon in their direction. Officer Jeremy Kennedy, a 7-year veteran of the department, returned fire, striking Smith. Officer Evan Sturgeon, a 5-year veteran, was present but did not discharge his weapon. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman and her child were unharmed, and no officers were injured. The department's shooting review board determined that the officers' actions were within departmental policy. The incident was also reviewed by the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office.

On April 27, 2025, at approximately 4:36 p.m., officers responded to a residence regarding a man in crisis with a self-inflicted neck wound. Inside the home, Derick P. Morgan, 56, held a knife and, according to investigators, charged toward a Marion police officer. A Grant County Sheriff’s deputy fired, striking Morgan, who died at the scene. Indiana State Police is the lead agency; findings will be forwarded to the Grant County Prosecutor.

On April 23, 2025, at approximately 8:40 a.m., officers from the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police responded to a report of a man allegedly pointing a firearm at another individual in the 700 block of Dana, Indiana. Upon arrival, officers established defensive positions as 57-year-old Michael Landers exited the residence while brandishing a gun. The Terre Haute Police Department’s Special Response Team was called to assist. According to preliminary investigations, Landers pointed his weapon directly at officers. An officer opened fire, striking Landers. Medical aid was administered at the scene, and Landers was transported to a hospital in Clinton, Indiana, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, and the incident is under investigation by the Indiana State Police.

On April 14, 2025, Henry County Sheriff's deputies attempted to stop a maroon Dodge Durango driven by Dewuan Hampton for erratic driving on State Road 3 near Indiana Avenue in New Castle. Hampton fled, initiating a pursuit that continued westbound on I-70 through Hancock County and into Marion County. Police chased the vehicle at high speed for more than 40 miles until it crashed into 2 cars. Dewuan Hampton was ejected as the vehicle rolled multiple times. He died on the road at East Washington Street and Mitthoefer Road in Indianapolis. Three passengers in the Durango and the driver of the Mustang were transported to local hospitals with varying injuries. The Indiana State Police are investigating the circumstances of the pursuit and crash.
