At approximately 7:00 a.m. on May 11, 2025, a detained individual was found unresponsive in the medical unit of the Elkhart County Correctional Complex. CPR was initiated by correctional staff, and emergency medical services were dispatched. The individual was pronounced dead on the scene by Concord medics. The Elkhart County Homicide Unit and the Elkhart County Coroner's Office are conducting an investigation. The person’s identity has not yet been released pending family notification.

On May 8, 2025, Chicago Police Department officers attempted to apprehend a man wanted for aggravated battery in the 13400 block of South Baltimore Avenue on the Far South Side of Chicago. The man entered a vehicle and drove away. Officers pursued him across state lines into Hammond, Indiana. The chase ended when the vehicle crashed near Dearborn Avenue and Gostlin Street. As officers approached, the man allegedly fired at them. Officers opened fire and killed him. A firearm was recovered at the scene. COPA is investigating.

On May 5, 2025, 65-year-old Mark Vawter was shot and killed by deputies outside the Hendricks County Courthouse in Danville, Indiana. Vawter, the great-grandfather of two children killed in a February car crash, allegedly opened fire on an inmate transport van. Believing the man charged in the crash, S'Doni Pettis, was inside, Vawter fired at deputies and the vehicle. Deputies returned fire, striking him once. Vawter died at the scene. Pettis was not present, as his hearing had been rescheduled. A gun was recovered at the scene. The Indiana State Police is leading the investigation.

On May 1, 2025, Lafayette Police Department officers responded to a domestic violence call to assist a woman and her son in leaving a residence. Upon arrival, officers encountered 55-year-old Kenneth D. Smith. During the interaction, police engaged him in a shootout and killed him.

On May 1, 2025, Lafayette police responded to a domestic disturbance at the Cypress Square Apartments on Ravenwood Court. A woman and her juvenile son had requested assistance leaving the residence due to safety concerns. While officers were inside the apartment with the woman and child, Kenneth D. Smith, 55, began firing a weapon in their direction. Officer Jeremy Kennedy, a 7-year veteran of the department, returned fire, striking Smith. Officer Evan Sturgeon, a 5-year veteran, was present but did not discharge his weapon. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman and her child were unharmed, and no officers were injured. On April 27, 2025, around 4:36 p.m., law enforcement responded to a home in the 3600 block of South Washington Street in Marion, Indiana, following reports of a man in mental health crisis who had sustained a self-inflicted neck wound. Officers encountered 56-year-old Derick P. Morgan bleeding and holding a knife. Despite repeated commands to disarm, Morgan allegedly charged at a Marion police officer. A deputy from the Grant County Sheriff's Department discharged a firearm, striking Morgan. He was pronounced dead in his home. The investigation is being led by the Indiana State Police, with findings to be submitted to the Grant County Prosecutor's Office.

On April 23, 2025, at approximately 8:40 a.m., officers from the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police responded to a report of a man allegedly pointing a firearm at another individual in the 700 block of Dana, Indiana. Upon arrival, officers established defensive positions as 57-year-old Michael Landers exited the residence while brandishing a gun. The Terre Haute Police Department’s Special Response Team was called to assist. According to preliminary investigations, Landers pointed his weapon directly at officers. An officer opened fire, striking Landers. Medical aid was administered at the scene, and Landers was transported to a hospital in Clinton, Indiana, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, and the incident is under investigation by the Indiana State Police.

On April 14, 2025, Henry County Sheriff's deputies attempted to stop a maroon Dodge Durango driven by Dewuan Hampton for erratic driving on State Road 3 near Indiana Avenue in New Castle. Hampton fled, initiating a pursuit that continued westbound on I-70 through Hancock County and into Marion County. Police chased the vehicle at high speed for more than 40 miles until it crashed into 2 cars. Dewuan Hampton was ejected as the vehicle rolled multiple times. He died on the road at East Washington Street and Mitthoefer Road in Indianapolis. Three passengers in the Durango and the driver of the Mustang were transported to local hospitals with varying injuries. The Indiana State Police are investigating the circumstances of the pursuit and crash.

On April 12, 2025, at approximately 2:30 p.m., a 37-year-old male inmate was found unresponsive in his cell at the LaGrange County Jail. He was identified as William Howard Ellis. Ellis had been facing multiple charges, including possession and sale of methamphetamine and battery against law enforcement officers. While out on bond, he was arrested again in May 2024 for thefts in Elkhart and Allen counties in Indiana. A hearing on a motion to dismiss charges had been scheduled for April 14, 2025.

On April 9, 2025, Gary Police responded to a home on the 2200 block of Carolina Street after reports of a domestic disturbance involving a 38-year-old man barricaded in a room with a one-year-old baby while armed. A 35-year-old family member was shot and injured before police arrived. The man fired multiple shots at responding officers. Gary SWAT, with assistance from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, used tear gas and tactical equipment. Around 4:20 a.m., the man exited the home holding the baby and pointing a gun at officers. A Gary officer shot and killed him. The baby appeared physically unharmed.

Around 1:18 a.m. on April 6, 2025, a Fort Wayne police officer attempted to stop a vehicle near East State Boulevard and Hobson Road. The driver refused to stop. Police escalated a pursuit. Moments later, the driver crashed the vehicle into a utility pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported. When approached, Sykes refused to comply and fled on foot with his hands in his pockets. During the pursuit, an officer deployed a Taser, and subsequently, Sykes was shot. A handgun was found next to Sykes at the scene. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured in the incident.
