On September 8, 2021, around 12:04 p.m., a Linn County deputy attempted to stop a blue Nissan Altima reported in a domestic disturbance. The driver, Leo Alan Ray, refused to stop. A pursuit began but was called off near Highway 151 and Wright Brothers Boulevard due to safety concerns. Shortly afterward, Ray’s vehicle crossed the center line on Highway 151 near the 300 block and collided nearly head-on with a northbound Kenworth dump truck. Ray and his female passenger were ejected and died at the scene. The truck driver was not injured.

On May 31, 2021, a Linn County deputy attempted to stop a reportedly stolen vehicle near Center Point. The juvenile driver did not stop, and officers escalated a chase that continued northbound on I-380 and westbound on Highway 150. In the 2800 block of Highway 150, both the driver and a juvenile passenger jumped from the moving vehicle. The driver was struck by the car and died at the scene. The vehicle continued moving and crashed into a home; no one inside was injured. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating.

Emmanuel Martin Nyariel, 16, was killed when a stolen vehicle crashed after police initiated a high-speed pursuit. Officers began chasing the car after a report of vehicle tampering. The pursuit reached speeds over 100 mph before the vehicle lost control crossing railroad tracks, overturned multiple times, and landed in a parking lot. Three teens died in the crash, including Emmanuel, a Des Moines Public Schools student.

Majok Martin Nyariel, 14, was one of three teens killed during a high-speed police pursuit in Clive, Iowa. Police responded to a vehicle tampering report and pursued a stolen Chevrolet Malibu. The chase ended when the vehicle lost control and flipped repeatedly. Majok was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a student in the Des Moines Community School District.
