Jersey City police arrived at a domestic dispute and allege that a man with a gun had a woman in a headlock. Police shot and killed him. Officer Omar Polanco was cleared for the killing of Joseph Robertson but indicted for cannabis use.

Junting Pao Was local restaurant owner outside of his restaurant making a delivery when Paterson police ran a high speed chase into him. He was killed and several other pedestrians were injured. The crash occurred only two days after pursuit laws were loosened, allowing police to chase stolen cars. Police alleged that the car they were chasing may have been stolen.

Middlesex County deputies were allegedly executing an eviction order. A number of other agencies joined in. They returned again to execute a search warrant for a gun. They then attempted to arrest Louis for unlawful firearm possession, in addition to forcing the eviction issue. On 01/09/2022, Hillsborough Township Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop near Amwell Road and CPL Langon Way. Officers encountered 24-year-old Joshua Mathis during the stop. Officers fired their weapons during the encounter, striking and killing Mathis at the scene. On 12/29/2021, Paterson police investigated an earlier incident and encountered Thelonious McKnight near East Main Street and Hillman Street shortly before 9 p.m. A Paterson police detective fired his service weapon during the encounter and killed McKnight. On 12/18/2021, around 5 a.m., Vineland Police Department officers responded to a disturbance at the Penn Lincoln Mobile Home Park involving a backhoe. Joshua Gonzalez, 20, was operating the construction equipment, causing significant damage to residences and vehicles. Officers attempted for approximately 30 minutes to stop Gonzalez. During the encounter, Officer Louis Platania shot and killed Gonzalez.

On 11/07/2021, Princeton police pursued a stolen SUV driven by 15 year old Damajia Jenay Horner. During the high speed chase, the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic on Route 27 near Carnegie Drive and collided head on with another vehicle. Horner died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Police said the pursuit followed the reported theft of the SUV and were investigating the circumstances surrounding the chase.

On 11/07/2021, Jodi Marcou, a 61 year old woman from Kendall Park, was driving on Route 27 near Carnegie Drive in Princeton when her vehicle was struck head on by an SUV involved in a police chase. The pursuit began after the reported theft of the SUV. Marcou died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision. The crash occurred after the pursued vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic. Police were investigating the role of the pursuit in the fatal crash.

On November 5, 2021, members of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office attempted to execute a residential search warrant on Chelsea Avenue in Long Branch. During the operation, Mark D. Walker II shot and wounded one of the detectives. The detectives retreated, and Walker barricaded himself inside the residence with his two-week-old infant. Negotiations continued for approximately seven hours without success. Around 2 a.m. on November 6, a fire erupted in the apartment building. Walker fled the building holding the infant and fired several rounds at officers, striking a BearCat vehicle. In response, three MOCERT officers returned fire, fatally wounding Walker, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The infant was unharmed.

On 11/01/2021, Newark Police Division Officer Louis Santiago, off duty and driving while intoxicated, struck Damian Dymka on the shoulder near Exit 151 of the Garden State Parkway. On 10/24/2021, the Lyndhurst Police Department received a call at approximately 8:07 a.m. to conduct a welfare check on a 36-year-old man. A uniformed officer arrived at the residence on Post Avenue and encountered the man outside his home. The man was armed with a handgun and allegedly fired at the officer. The officer returned fire but did not hit the man. The man then turned the gun on himself and died on the sidewalk.

On 10/09/2021, Angel Acevedo Jr. was driving a Toyota Corolla near the Garden State Parkway North at Asbury Ave in the Asbury Park area of New Jersey when his vehicle was struck by a pickup truck driven by an off-duty police officer who was en route to work. Investigators determined that the off-duty officer was operating his vehicle under the influence of intoxicating substances and lost control, causing the truck to leave the Parkway, go airborne over an embankment, and collide with Acevedo’s car. Acevedo and his wife, Daniela Correia Salles, were both pronounced dead at the scene. On 10/09/2021, Daniela Correia Salles was traveling on the Garden State Parkway North near Asbury Avenue in the Asbury Park area of New Jersey when a pickup truck driven by an off duty Hillsdale Borough police officer struck the vehicle she was riding in. Investigators determined the off duty officer was driving under the influence at the time of the crash. Daniela Correia Salles and the driver of the vehicle, Angel Acevedo Jr., were both pronounced dead at the scene. The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office later charged the officer with vehicular homicide in connection with the collision.

On 08/19/2021, at approximately 7:34 p.m., Ridgefield Park Police responded to a home near Main Street and Grand Avenue after receiving a report of a man barricaded inside and armed with a gun. On 08/01/2021, Julius Filep, 55, exited a stopped car and walked into the oncoming lane of traffic on State Route 18 in East Brunswick, New Jersey. Officers entered the building and attempted to speak with Manzo, but their efforts to communicate with him were unsuccessful. When an officer tried to enter Manzo’s room, Manzo allegedly attempted to stab the officer with a pair of scissors. Officer James R. Crawford, observing the threat, shot and killed Manzo.

On 05/25/2021, Francis De La Cruz Abad, 21, was operating a Yamaha scooter when Officer Brian Davis of the Hamilton Township Police Department, driving an unmarked vehicle, attempted to initiate a stop shortly after 9 p.m. De La Cruz Abad continued traveling westbound on NJ-33 and collided with a Dodge Caravan. The driver of the Caravan was making a left turn into the Mercerville Shopping Center. De La Cruz Abad was thrown from the scooter, striking the windshield of the van, and was killed in the crash.

On April 13, 2021, Toms River police pursued a stolen vehicle driven by a 14-year-old boy. The pursuit ended when the car left the roadway and struck a tree in the 1300 block of Old Freehold Road. The vehicle was heavily damaged and caught fire. The 14-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene along with a 14-year-old female passenger. The Toms River Police Department and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the fatal crash.

On 04/05/2021, around 3 p.m., a crash occurred at Union Road and Oak Road in Buena Vista, New Jersey. Franklin Township police officers responded to the scene along with local Buena Vista authorities. During the response, Roy Kenneth Jackel Jr., 41, allegedly entered a Franklin Township police cruiser and drove away. Officers pursued the stolen vehicle until it crashed. An "encounter" between Jackel and police followed, during which a Franklin Township officer shot and killed Jackel. Details regarding what led to the shooting have not been disclosed.

On 04/03/2021, a standoff occurred at a residence located at 601 6th Street in Carlstadt, New Jersey, resulting in the lockdown of two city blocks. Police entered the home around 8 p.m. and discovered a deceased female victim inside. James T. Cox, 43, was also found dead of a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On 02/06/2021, Camden County police officers Edward Melton and trainee Danielle Sigwart observed Rashad Muse speeding on Morton Street and activated emergency equipment to stop his vehicle. Muse continued driving and entered a snowy lot where officers Melton, Billy Tran, Joseph Razo, and trainees Sigwart and Eric Sweeney exited their vehicles and ordered him to get out. Muse drove forward, struck multiple vehicles including a police vehicle, and drove close to officers on foot before leaving the lot. Sgt. Brandon Galloza later observed the vehicle traveling at high speed and saw it crash into a support column under I-676 near Pine Street. Muse exited the vehicle, climbed a fence, and ran onto the interstate where civilian vehicles struck and killed him. The New Jersey Attorney General conducted the required independent investigation and released body-camera footage after meeting with family members. Public reporting does not show criminal charges, officer discipline, or civil litigation resulting from the incident.
