On July 31, 2021, at approximately 4:08 a.m., Celina Police officers observed a blue 2004 Acura run a stop sign. Officers pursued the vehicle after it was observed swerving on the roadway.

The driver, later identified as 33-year-old Chad R. Rammel, did not stop as officers activated their lights and sirens. Police escalated a chase to speeds exceeding 95 mph. police alleged that they “called the chase” apparently moments before a crash was reported on a deserted narrow country Road just passed four in the morning we’re all allegedly Rammel died in a single vehicle crash. Chad Rammell, the driver, and so occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead. The incident is under investigation by the Ohio State Patrol.

A short time later, Mercer County Central Dispatch received a report of a crash on Mud Pike Road. Responders from the Ohio Highway Patrol and Mercer County Sheriff's Office discovered the crashed Acura. Rammel, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the crash site.

The driver initially complied but then drove away. Police escalated a high-speed pursuit. The chase ended when the vehicle lost control and overturned.

On July 29, 2021, around 5:30 p.m., officers from the Mansfield Police Department responded to a 911 hang-up call at an apartment located on 300 Wood Street in Mansfield, Ohio. Upon arrival, officers heard someone yelling for help from inside the residence.
Officers ordered James Haynes, a 31-year-old man armed with a knife, to drop the weapon. Instead, he allegedly moved toward a window. An officer fired a Taser, but Haynes began re-entering the apartment through the broken window. Officers opened fire, then forced entry into the apartment. Inside, they again confronted him while he was still armed and fired additional shots, killing him.

Officer Cecil Morrison responded to a report of domestic violence at an apartment on Third Street. Upon arrival, he approached Michael Whitmer's vehicle with his firearm drawn. Inside the vehicle was Whitmer’s 4-year-old son, seated in the back seat. Whitmer attempted to reverse the vehicle out of the driveway multiple times, during which his car collided with an unoccupied police cruiser. As Whitmer reversed again, Officer Morrison fired multiple shots into the vehicle, fatally wounding Whitmer. Reports indicate that Whitmer had been unarmed at the time of the shooting.

Following the incident, Officer Morrison was charged with negligent homicide, a misdemeanor offense. He pleaded no contest to the charge and was ordered to permanently surrender his Ohio Peace Officer Training Certificate, effectively ending his law enforcement career in the state. Notably, after the shooting and before his plea, Morrison was hired by the Nelsonville Police Department; however, his law enforcement certification surrender precludes future employment as an officer in Ohio.

On July 4, 2021, at approximately 11 p.m., deputies from the Portage County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on 7334 Bennington Pike in Ravenna, Ohio. On July 1, 2021, officers from the Cleveland Division of Police were in the area of East 93rd Street and Dickens Avenue when they encountered a vehicle driven by 28-year-old Richard Gaines. Gaines reportedly rammed police vehicles and drove away from the area.
Officers pursued Gaines until his vehicle struck a pole and flipped near East 111th Street and Forest Avenue. After the crash, police reported hearing a gunshot from inside the vehicle. Gaines was found dead in the vehicle from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

East Cleveland police attempted to stop a vehicle for erratic driving near Superior and Hayden avenues around 1 a.m. The driver did not stop.
