Just after 12:30 a.m., officers responded to an armed robbery on Northeast 82nd Avenue where police say Michael A. Story, 53, of Portland had taken a woman hostage and fled with her. Dispatch later received a call from the woman. She said she had escaped and was taken to a hospital for evaluation and had been sexually assaulted.
The vehicle was again seen near Northeast Marine Drive and Northeast Blue Lake Road and police tried to stop it. Police escalated a chase that ended near NE 141st Avenue and NE Sandy Boulevard after police used spike strips to deflate the car’s tires. Story ran away while allegedly firing shots at the officers. While securing the area, officers reported hearing more gunshots going off. A multi-agency team assisted with the search and a member of the air support unit said they found a heat source in a parking lot that appeared to be a person lying down. A drone was sent and discovered Story injured on the ground. He died of suicide under police duress.

On Sunday, June 25, 2023, a police chase caused a crash involving 5 vehicles near the intersection of Northeast Glisan Street and Northeast 147th Avenue. Jennifer Parise was killed.

On March 28, 2023, Marganne Allen, a 53-year-old state employee, was cycling home from work in Salem, Oregon, when DEA Special Agent Samuel T. Landis ran a stop sign and entered the intersection at High and Leslie Streets, leading to a collision that killed bicyclist Marganne Allen. Police created a standoff in Grants Pass, Ore., on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023 lasting into the next day Benjamin Obadiah Foster who was barricaded underneath the home. Jacksonville Police Department were sent to check on a “reckless” vehicle on Jan. 1, 2023 and found it swerving on the roadway heading toward Jacksonville from Caty Road, tried to pull it over but the vehicle didn’t stop. Deputies escalated a chase and the driver lost control of the vehicle, hit a tree near the intersection of South State Road and Sunset Drive and died. The name was not released. No officers were charged.

A Springfield PD officer was stopped at a red light on 42nd Street and Main Street when they saw a dark-colored Range Rover pass him eastbound on Main Street. Police tried to chase it but temporarily lost track of it. They said the car was going 80-90 miles per hour. Police began searching for the car when they said they got a 911 call about a car crash in the 3800 block of Highway 126. Officials said they arrived “within seconds,” to find the driver of the Ranger Rover dead. Of note, officers can only be at a crash site within seconds if they are actively pursuing the vehicle prior to the crash.

On November 19, 2022, at approximately 12:24 a.m., Portland Police Bureau officers responded to a reported armed robbery near Southeast Powell Boulevard and 50th Avenue. Officers pursued a vehicle they believed matched the description to the Reedwood Friends Church parking lot at 2901 SE Steele Street. As officers approached, Immanueal “Manny” Clark, a 30-year-old Black male, fled on foot. Officer Christopher Sathoff fired three shots, striking Clark once in the lower back. Clark was transported to a hospital, where he died two days later.

Subsequent investigations revealed that Clark was unarmed and not connected to the reported robbery. A grand jury declined to indict Officer Sathoff. However, an internal affairs investigation found the shooting violated bureau directives, though command staff later dismissed this finding. Clark's family has filed a federal lawsuit alleging excessive force and wrongful death.
