Two Canyon Police officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation around 12:30 a.m. After discovering warrants connected to the driver, they asked Michael Deanthony Andrews to step out of the vehicle. Texas Tech Police initiated a pursuit of a Saturn Ion just before 2 a.m. The pursuit was discontinued by Tech Police due to unsafe speeds. On 06/17/2021, Garland Police responded to a disturbance call at a residence on River Fern Avenue. Officers encountered James Edward Ryan outside the home during the response. A Fulshear police officer pulled over a vehicle around 10:40 a.m. for running a stop sign. A check of the driver’s license revealed an outstanding felony drug warrant out of Virginia. The officer informed Calvin Elmore that he was under arrest. Elmore allegedly shoved the officer, ran back to his car, and attempted to drive away. The officer reportedly tried to pull him out of the vehicle and then shot and killed Elmore. The vehicle continued for approximately 800 yards before crashing into a tree in a field.

On 06/06/2021, deputies with the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a person described as homicidal and suicidal who had threatened his girlfriend and discharged a firearm at a residence on Ramsey Road. Deputies attempted to detain Johnathan Steve Cooper after arriving on scene. During the encounter, Cooper moved away from officers while holding a handgun. On 04/26/2021, El Paso police restrained and killed 40 year old Daniel Diaz, Jr. during a response to a reported possible break-in at a residence on Buckner Street. Officers encountered Diaz experiencing what family and reporting described as a panic attack. As an officer attempted to speak with him, police deployed a Taser. Additional officers arrived and took Diaz to the ground. During the arrest, multiple officers struck Diaz while attempting to restrain him.
After officers placed Diaz in handcuffs, they observed that he was no longer responsive. Diaz was transported for medical care and died a short time later. The death was ruled a homicide. A departmental review board later exonerated the officers involved, and no criminal charges were filed.
