On 06/05/2021, Jose Angel Ibarra Ruiz attended a quinceañera and graduation celebration at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Needville. Around 11:45 p.m., an off duty Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office deputy who was working private security at the event shot and killed Ruiz outside the venue. The sheriff's office stated that Ruiz had a knife and that the deputy opened fire during an altercation. Family members disputed the official account and said Ruiz was attempting to protect himself from a group of people who confronted him. Ruiz's family later held a press conference outside the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office, questioned whether the shooting was justified, and demanded the release of any available video evidence. The Texas Rangers conducted the investigation into the shooting.
