Salt Lake City Police Department’s Gang Unit was investigating someone with a felony warrant and requested SLCPD patrol officers to help with a traffic stop. Officers claim they gave repeated orders to everyone in the car to exit. Body worn camera video recorded sounds of Halai reversing and hitting a parked car and fleeing. Police used spike strips. Halai continued driving. Halai then crashed head-on into an empty parked truck near 500 North Star Crest Drive. Halai got out and ran south towards a house. An officer deployed a taser and two other officers fired shots. Halai fled into a home through a ground-level window. A third SLCPD officer fired additional rounds prior to fully entering the home.Several officers entered the home through the window, front door and garage. Officers found Halai injured inside the home’s living quarters and found him and two people who were living in the home in the same room. Halai died on Saturday January 21, 2023.No officers were charged.

Saratoga Springs PD allege that around 11 p.m. on 01/09/2022 in Lehi, they had stopped a white Chevy Suburban in the area of 1000 East and Main Street but that the driver drove away during the traffic stop. Lehi PD and Utah County Sheriff deputies escalated a chase inside of Saratoga Springs city limits. Deputies put down spike strips and punctured the tires but the vehicle continued to drive.
Police claim that the chase was terminated for a short time. When Saratoga Springs PD saw the Suburban a short time later, 2 agencies were chasing the man together. After driving into a dead-end street, he allegedly exited the vehicle, fled on foot and attempted to enter a random residence. Police allege they saw a gun and shot and killed him.

On September 22, 2021, 19-year-old Daisha Reynolds was killed during a high-speed police pursuit that began in Wasatch County and ended in Summit County, Utah. A Wasatch County deputy located a stolen vehicle on State Route 113 and attempted a traffic stop. The driver did not stop. Police escalated a chase through Midway. The chase was temporarily halted twice when deputies lost visual contact. The pursuit resumed on River Road and continued onto U.S. Route 40, with speeds exceeding 95 mph.
