Off-duty deputy Racer was in his cruiser with a woman at the time of the crash, traveling on Route 60 toward Third Avenue when he hit Laney Hudson in the crosswalk for unclear reasons. Eyewitnesses said they smelled alcohol on the officer’s breath after the fatal accident. The Sheriff’s Office claimed that they had administered a breathalyzer and it was negative but police did not state when this was done. Eyewitnesses also stated that the officer’s vehicle had driven without lights and he only turned them on after the accident. The officer was not charged. The family is demanding a jury trial as of September 2023.

On November 19, 2021, Christopher Wade allegedly attacked his former girlfriend and killed another woman at a residence. Following the incident, Wade fled to Montcalm, West Virginia, where he was located by police. When officers confronted him, Wade reportedly refused to drop his firearm. On October 18, 2021, Shawn Delemore Dempsey was pursued by Mingo County Sheriff's deputies following the discovery of his parents, Shawn Dempsey, 52, and Karen Sue Dempsey, 52, who were found dead. On September 3, 2021, Mark Edward Danley allegedly robbed a business in Weston around 10 a.m. Officers pursued Danley on U.S. Route 19 into Jane Lew, during which Danley rammed an officer's police cruiser. The pursuit involved troopers from the West Virginia State Police, deputies from the Lewis County Sheriff's Office, and Division of Natural Resources officers. The chase continued until stop sticks disabled Danley's vehicle, causing him to flee on foot. Danley ran into a backyard, where he attempted to take a man hostage. The man managed to push Danley to the ground. As Danley tried to get up and allegedly aimed to shoot at deputies, officers shot and killed him before he could fire.

On August 18, 2021, deputies from the Raleigh County Sheriff's Office responded to a complaint of indecent exposure at 219 Rural Acres Drive in Beckley, West Virginia. Upon arrival, Kevin Eugene Norris was reportedly uncooperative with deputies. During the encounter, Norris allegedly pointed a pellet gun at deputies that resembled a semi-automatic handgun. Deputies shot and killed Norris during the confrontation.

On May 28, 2021, troopers from the West Virginia State Police, along with deputies, were attempting to locate a murder suspect in Martinsburg, West Virginia. While inside a home in the 100 block of Fairfax Street, a man shot and wounded a trooper who was protected by a ballistic vest. The man, identified as Herman King Myers Jr., then barricaded himself inside the home. Following an exchange of gunfire with troopers, officers entered the residence and found Myers dead. It was not immediately disclosed who fired the fatal shot.

On May 23, 2021, Parkersburg Police officers responded to a reported stabbing in progress at the Oakwood Village Apartments, located at 2503 Beverly Street. Upon arrival, officers found a 60-year-old woman who had been stabbed multiple times with a meat cleaver. Rufus James Ramsey III was allegedly still armed with the weapon. An officer ordered Ramsey to drop the weapon, but he did not comply. The officer then shot and killed Ramsey.

On January 21, 2021, the Elkins Police Department attempted to serve a felony warrant on Ty Garrett Hilderbrand, who was suspected of making terroristic threats. After hours of negotiation attempts with no response, officers entered the building and discovered Hilderbrand, the lone occupant, dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.
