Matthew Lee Walker

Age :38

Gender :Male

Location : 241 Main Street

City : Branford

County : New Haven

State : Connecticut

Agency : Branford Police Department

Officer(s) : Not Disclosed

Cause of Death : Suicide

Event : Suicide under police duress during armed standoff

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 04/13/2021, Matthew Lee Walker, 38, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during an approximately six-hour armed standoff with Branford Police Department officers at his second-floor apartment at 241 Main Street. Police responded after receiving 911 calls reporting gunfire from the building.

Police reported that Walker fired numerous rounds from the apartment using multiple firearms. One round struck 65-year-old Ashwin Patel, who was outside a nearby liquor store. Patel survived. Walker also exchanged gunfire with responding police.

Police established a perimeter, evacuated people from the area and deployed tactical personnel during the prolonged standoff. Body-worn-camera footage subsequently released by police documented portions of the tactical response and gunfire.

After the gunfire ended, police entered the apartment and found Walker dead. Authorities determined that the gunshot wound that killed Walker was self-inflicted rather than police gunfire.

A friend subsequently told reporters that Walker had been depressed earlier in the year. Police records also showed that three days before the fatal encounter, a woman had contacted authorities because she was concerned about Walker's behavior.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Branford Police Department personnel who exchanged gunfire with Walker were not publicly identified in the sources located for this case.

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 04/12/2021, DeKalb County police shot and killed 35 year old Matthew Zadok Williams during a prolonged standoff at a condominium complex on Terrace Trail in Decatur. Police responded around 4 p.m. after receiving calls reporting a man holding a knife in a residential area. Officers located Williams standing outside the residence while holding the knife.
During the standoff, officers approached Williams and issued commands. Police stated that Williams moved toward officers while holding the knife. Officers opened fire during the encounter. Williams was shot multiple times and died at the scene.
The DeKalb County District Attorney, Sherry Boston, reviewed the case and ruled the use of deadly force justified, and no criminal charges were filed against the officers involved. Williams’ family later filed a civil lawsuit against the DeKalb County Police Department, alleging wrongful death and excessive force. The civil case proceeded separately from the district attorney’s decision.

REPORTED EVENTS:
On 04/10/2021, a 37-year-old man from Springville was killed when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a tree during a multi-agency police pursuit in Utah County, Utah.
.
At approximately 6:00 p.m., authorities received a report of a hit-and-run collision in the Goshen area. The occupants of the vehicle struck in that collision followed the fleeing vehicle and provided information that helped Santaquin Police Department officers locate it.
.
Santaquin police pursued the vehicle beyond their jurisdiction and requested assistance from the Utah County Sheriff's Office. .
At approximately 4765 South, near the Palmyra-Lake Shore boundary, the vehicle veered off the left side of the roadway. The driver attempted to correct back toward the road, but the vehicle then traveled off the right side of 3200 West and struck a tree.

.
Contemporaneous reporting did not publicly identify the deceased beyond describing him as a 37-year-old man from Springville. KSL, KUTV and Gephardt Daily independently reported the fatal pursuit. The Utah Department of Public Safety investigated the fatal crash.

Event : Killed by police during response to shots fired call

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 04/10/2021, at approximately 11:00 p.m., San Fernando Police Department officers responded to a 911 call reporting gunfire in the alley behind the 600 block of S. Brand Boulevard. Witnesses described the shooter as a heavyset male adult leaving the area in an older model minivan. At around 11:01 p.m., officers located a vehicle matching this description on Harps Street near Fourth Street, with Guillermo "Memo" Amezcua, 48, seated in the driver’s seat. Officers issued multiple commands over approximately five minutes for Amezcua to show his hands. Police alleged that Amezcua was uncooperative and observed manipulating an unknown object. To gain compliance, an officer deployed three less-lethal stun bags aimed at the rear window area of the vehicle, but these attempts were unsuccessful. At approximately 11:06 p.m., police reported observing a muzzle flash consistent with a gunshot from inside the vehicle. Officers opened fire, fatally striking Amezcua, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department investigated the officer-involved shooting. According to an autopsy report dated 04/14/2021, Amezcua sustained five gunshot wounds, with three being fatal. The report also documented tattoos on Amezcua, including "Memo" and "Jennifer Marie" on his neck and "Guillermo Amezcua Jr." on his left shoulder.
.
Family members have disputed the police's account of the incident. Guillermo Amezcua Jr., the deceased’s eldest son, claimed that officers did not give his father a chance to respond and began shooting from multiple angles. The family has called for justice and further investigation into the circumstances of Amezcua's death.

The available evidence establishes a police-pursuit connection but does not provide enough reliable detail to reconstruct the complete chronology of the pursuit, including where officers first attempted to stop McCroskey, why the pursuit was initiated, the precise route traveled, speeds involved, or the exact location and mechanics of the fatal crash.
.
The 04/09/2021 Blount County fatality documented by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System is consistent with the independently documented death of Tyler James McCroskey following a police pursuit.
