On February 8, 2021, Idaho Falls Police officers searched for a man who had fled a traffic stop. During the search, officers entered several backyards in the neighborhood on the 200 block of South Boulevard. Officer Elias Aurelio Cerdasencountered 58-year-old Joseph Johnson in his own backyard and shot him, mistakenly believing he was the fleeing driver. Johnson was unarmed and was not the wanted man but a local homeowner in his own backyard. The wanted man, Tanner Shoesmith, was later found hiding in a nearby shed. In August 2021, Officer Cerdas was indicted on a charge of felony involuntary manslaughter, and in February 2023, Johnson’s family filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against the Idaho Falls Police Department, alleging excessive force and civil rights violations.

On February 8, 2021, at approximately 12:12 a.m., officers from the Gastonia Police Department responded to a report of a suspected overdose at 1215 Mountain Avenue in Gastonia, North Carolina. Upon arrival, officers encountered 33-year-old Shae Estelle Jones inside the residence, reportedly with a firearm.

Officer K. Solano-Garitaopened fire, striking Jones. She was transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center and later airlifted to Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Jones died from her injuries the following day, February 9, 2021.

At approximately 11:29 p.m. on February 8, 2021, an officer from the Oxford Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Clay Tatum. Tatum did not comply with the stop and fled, leading to a chase that extended beyond Oxford into Lafayette County. After calling for backup, Tatum pulled over but then ran into a nearby residence. Officers followed him into the home, where Tatum allegedly brandished and pointed a weapon at an officer, resulting in the police shooting and killing him.

On 02/07/2021, around 11:25 a.m., Redding police officers responded to a report of a person waving a gun on the Cypress Avenue Bridge. Officers encountered two men and Brooke Leann Blair on the south curb of the bridge. Police said the group was initially cooperative while officers spoke with them. During the encounter, Blair removed a replica handgun from her waistband and raised it. Officers opened fire and killed her at the scene. The district attorney later ruled the shooting justified.

On 02/07/2021, Bettendorf police responded to a domestic disturbance call involving individuals who left before officers arrived. Later that night, around 1:51 a.m., police received a report of a suspicious occupied vehicle. Officers located the vehicle and the individuals connected to the earlier disturbance. A woman exited the vehicle and told officers the driver had threatened to kill her with a handgun. Police ordered the driver to exit the vehicle. Officers reported that the man produced a handgun, and an officer opened fire, killing Brian Gregory Scott at the scene. The shooting was later ruled justified by the district attorney.

On 02/07/2021, Mesa police responded around 11:30 p.m. to an apartment complex after receiving information from a mental health crisis line regarding Keenan Sailer. Police reported that Sailer was making suicidal statements and that a baby and a toddler were inside the apartment with him. Officers remained on scene for approximately 45 minutes. After ending contact with the crisis line, Sailer exited the apartment while armed with a gun. Police said he did not comply with commands to disarm. Officers deployed less-lethal rounds and then opened fire, killing Sailer at the scene. The shooting was later reviewed and cleared by the county attorney.

On February 7, 2021, around 9:30 a.m., Lacy Lakeview police responded to a call from a neighbor reporting a man running around with an ax. The man, later identified as 34-year-old Dustin Demaurean Powell, allegedly struck several cars with the ax, shattering at least one window. He also reportedly hit another person with the weapon, but the injury was not severe. Officer Thomas Beasley arrived and ordered Powell to drop the ax and stop advancing toward him. Powell did not comply, and Beasley opened fire, killing him.

On February 7, 2021, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Dallas police officers responded to reports of an active shooter at an apartment in the 9800 block of Summerwood Circle. Upon arrival, officers were fired upon, resulting in damage to a squad car's window; no officers were injured, and they did not return fire. The situation escalated into a standoff, with SWAT units deployed. At around 7 p.m., officers entered the apartment and discovered three individuals deceased from gunshot wounds: 26-year-old Marietta Julieze Matthews, her mother, 55-year-old Tamiko Geniece Merriwether, and 24-year-old Nathan Rashad James. Investigations revealed that James, who was in a relationship with Matthews and resided with her, fatally shot both women before taking his own life.

On 02/06/2021, police responded around 8 p.m. to a reported domestic violence incident at a home in Kearns. Dennis Denham was reported to have threatened his 15-year-old grandson with a gun. Shortly after officers arrived, two gunshots were heard from inside the house. Denham’s wife and four grandchildren fled to a neighbor’s home. Denham remained inside and later exited the residence, yelling at officers and firing shots toward them. Police opened fire and killed Denham at the scene. On 02/06/2021, shortly after 11:30 a.m., a woman called 911 to report an armed man in her yard in Phoenix. While she was on the phone with dispatch, the man entered her home. The woman escaped through a window without injury. Responding officers surrounded the house and later observed Anthony Greco exit into the backyard while still armed. Officers ordered him to drop the gun. When he did not comply and reportedly raised the weapon, an officer opened fire and killed Greco at the scene. On February 6, 2021, at approximately 9:15 p.m., Long Beach Police Department officers responded to reports of a man, later identified as 26-year-old Anthony Steven Loia, walking near Magnolia Avenue and 14th Street, pointing a handgun at people and passing vehicles. Upon arrival, officers located Loia, who matched the description provided by callers. Officers gave multiple commands for Loia to drop his firearm, which he ignored. When he refused to comply, five officers opened fire, striking Loia. Officers immediately performed CPR, but Loia was pronounced dead at the scene. A firearm was recovered near his body.

Phillip Francis, 43, allegedly choked a woman, set her house on fire, and later returned to the scene where he began shooting at deputies. At least one deputy from the Orange County Sheriff's Office shot Francis. He was hospitalized following the incident and died from his injuries on February 13, 2021.

On 02/06/2021, around 8 a.m., Montgomery County police received multiple 911 calls reporting a man driving erratically in a Volkswagen sedan on Olney Laytonsville Road and Fieldcrest Road in Gaithersburg. Before Deputy Frank Pruitt arrived, the driver had already struck two vehicles. Upon arrival, Pruitt observed Kevin Costlow approaching two individuals with a large stick. A confrontation ensued where Costlow struck Pruitt with the stick. Pruitt attempted to use his Taser on Costlow, but it was ineffective. Subsequently, Deputy Pruitt shot and killed Costlow.

On 02/06/2021, Camden County police officers Edward Melton and trainee Danielle Sigwart observed Rashad Muse speeding on Morton Street and activated emergency equipment to stop his vehicle. Muse continued driving and entered a snowy lot where officers Melton, Billy Tran, Joseph Razo, and trainees Sigwart and Eric Sweeney exited their vehicles and ordered him to get out. Muse drove forward, struck multiple vehicles including a police vehicle, and drove close to officers on foot before leaving the lot. Sgt. Brandon Galloza later observed the vehicle traveling at high speed and saw it crash into a support column under I-676 near Pine Street. Muse exited the vehicle, climbed a fence, and ran onto the interstate where civilian vehicles struck and killed him. The New Jersey Attorney General conducted the required independent investigation and released body-camera footage after meeting with family members. Public reporting does not show criminal charges, officer discipline, or civil litigation resulting from the incident.

On February 5, 2021, Muncie Police Department officers responded to a home in the 1600 block of North Riley Road in Muncie, Indiana, following reports of a domestic dispute. A woman who had left the house with a child and another family member informed officers that a man inside the home was loading a rifle and making threats to harm himself. It was also reported that a domestic battery had occurred. Officers contacted the man by phone but soon heard what they believed to be a gunshot from inside the residence. Over the next six hours, several more gunshots were heard. Eventually, police entered the home and discovered the man's body.

Police believed Hagans was armed. As officers arrived in the area, Hagans drove away and was followed by police in marked and unmarked vehicles. The encounter culminated at a traffic light near Main Street and Cutspring Road, where police attempted to stop his vehicle by positioning a cruiser in front of him. Officers ordered Hagans to show his hands. Police reported that his vehicle moved forward and struck the cruiser. Officers opened fire on the vehicle, which became immobilized in snow. Hagans exited the vehicle, and police shot and killed him at the scene. The Connecticut Inspector General later ruled the shooting justified.

Officers entered the residence and discovered Cadavid deceased. The medical examiner determined she had been dead for approximately 8 to 10 hours. On February 5, 2021, at approximately 10:15 p.m., Trotwood Police officers responded to a theft report at the Speedway convenience store located at 5000 Olive Road where Andrew Hogan, 25, had allegedly stolen a 2-liter non-alcoholic beverage and was observed walking towards a nearby apartment complex.

Officers located Hogan near the Kensington apartment complex, where he reportedly refused commands. Police engaged him in an altercation, deployed a Taser, pepper spray, and a baton, but Hogan ran into an apartment in the 700 block of Kelford Place.

While officers awaited additional units, Hogan emerged from the apartment with a knife and allegedly lunged at Officer Michael Molchan Jr., who then opened fire, fatally wounding Hogan.

On February 4, 2021, Omar Felix Cueva, 39, was stopped by New Mexico State Police Officer Darian Jarrott on Interstate 10 near Avenida de Mesilla in Las Cruces, New Mexico, as part of an investigation with Homeland Security Investigations. During the traffic stop, Cueva fatally shot Officer Jarrott.

Cueva fled and continued driving eastbound on I-10. Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies, including the Las Cruces Police Department, New Mexico State Police, Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office, and U.S. Border Patrol, pursued him.

Officers deployed tire deflation devices, which disabled Cueva's white Chevrolet pickup truck. A Las Cruces Police Department officer rammed Cueva's vehicle, bringing it to a stop.

On 02/04/2021, shortly after 1 p.m., Nevada County sheriff’s deputies responded to multiple calls reporting a woman walking in the roadway on Alta Sierra Drive with two small children. Callers said the woman appeared distressed and possibly impaired. Deputies made contact with Ariella Sage Eloise Crawford within minutes of arriving. During the encounter, deputies Caleb Toderean and Matthew Harrison opened fire and killed Crawford at the scene. Reporting later indicated that Crawford feared deputies were there to take her children and that deputies said she was holding a knife. The district attorney later cleared the deputies, and a civil appeal filed on behalf of the children was denied.

On 02/04/2021, Mobile police officers went to a residence on East Lakeview Drive to serve a warrant related to an intimidation of a witness investigation. During the entry, another individual in the home surrendered to police. Trey Webster later exited a bedroom, and officers opened fire and killed Webster at the scene. The shooting was referred for investigation, which was reported as pending at the time.

On February 4, 2021, 30-year-old Jenoah Donald was pulled over by Clark County sheriff's deputies in Hazel Dell, Washington, for a defective taillight. During the stop, deputies attempted to remove Donald from his vehicle, leading to a physical altercation. Deputy Sean Boyle fired two shots, striking Donald once in the head. Donald was unarmed and died on February 12, 2021, after being on life support for over a week.

On February 4, 2021, around 7:41 p.m., deputies from the Clark County Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Northeast 68th and Northeast 2nd Avenue in Hazel Dell, Washington. During the traffic stop, one of the deputies shot Jenoah Donald (also known as Donald D. Jonah). Donald was transported to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition. His family was informed that there was nothing more doctors could do, and they began preparations for his funeral.

Around 11 p.m. on February 4, 2021, Oklahoma City police responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance. Officers were informed that the individual involved, later identified as 30-year-old Tilford "TJ" Barton, was armed with a firearm and had discharged it earlier that night. Upon arrival, officers encountered Barton hiding behind a tree. He produced a pistol and fired at Sergeant Gerald Ritter III, who returned fire, striking Barton. Barton fell to the ground and died at the scene. Sergeant Ritter was not injured during the incident.

On 02/04/2021, officers were searching for Dontae Green after he allegedly shot at officers at a grocery store in North Baltimore due to a dispute over his paycheck. Green was wanted on 19 charges, including attempted murder, armed robbery, and handgun violations. While police were clearing a residence associated with Green in the 1400 block of N. Mount Street, he allegedly fired at them from inside a closet. Officers returned fire, resulting in Green's death. During the incident, one deputy U.S. Marshal was seriously injured.

On February 3, 2021, the Deming Police Department and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security were involved in an operation in Deming, New Mexico, near 1st Street and 8th Street. On February 3, 2021, at approximately 3:51 p.m., Pomona Police Department officers attempted to stop a 1990 maroon Honda Accord for a vehicle code violation near San Antonio Avenue and Ninth Street. The driver, later identified as 22-year-old Eli Richard Machado Lopez, did not stop. Po.lice escalated a chase that reached speeds of up to 106 mph.
Police claim they "called off the chase" just before the driver collided with a Nissan Maxima at the intersection of South San Antonio Avenue and Philadelphia Street. The impact was severe, w.ith Pinto-Mendez sustaining fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the crash site.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident. Pinto-Mendez's father suffered a heart attack upon learning of his son's death.

On February 3, 2021, at approximately 11:00 a.m., agents from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and deputies from the Granville County Sheriff's Office arrived at 3147 Canady Mill Rd. in Franklinton, North Carolina, to serve an arrest warrant for 52-year-old Anthony Andrew Renuart. The charges against Renuart included first-degree statutory sex offense, four counts of first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, and disseminating obscenities to a minor. The search warrant pertained to the production of child pornography.

Upon their arrival, Renuart, who was armed, retreated into the residence. At approximately 11:00 a.m., he emerged from the house armed with a long gun. An SBI agent opened fire, fatally wounding Renuart.

On February 3, 2021, around 2:56 p.m., a neighbor called 911 to report hearing gunshots. The neighbor stated the shooter was walking toward his or her home. When deputies arrived, an exchange of gunfire occurred, and the man fled. Police later found Nicholas Pingel dead from a gunshot wound. Pingel had killed two individuals, 72-year-old Ray Engelking and 77-year-old Carl Halvorsen, who were unknown to him. Deputies involved in the incident were not identified in the reports.

Joshua Crites left before officers arrived. Police located his vehicle a short time later in the CVS parking lot at 2540 E. Washington St. During the encounter, Crites stabbed Officer Jeffrey Bieber multiple times. Police opened fire and killed Crites at the scene. Illinois State Police took over the investigation, which was reported as ongoing at the time.

On February 2, 2021, a Polk County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a car for a traffic violation. Wayne Keith "Weezie" Smith Jr. reportedly fled when the deputy activated his emergency lights. The deputy pursued at speeds reaching 90 mph. The pursuit ended when Smith’s vehicle ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree, resulting in his death.
