On 03/18/2024, Decatur Police attempted to arrest 38-year-old Rocky L. Dupin in connection with an armed robbery. During the arrest, Dupin pulled a gun from his waistband. Officers Dawson Roberts and Tanner Brummitt responded by opening fire, fatally shooting Dupin.

After Dupin’s death, police revealed that the weapon he pulled was a plastic replica.

This incident follows a similar event nearly a year prior when Officer Dawson Roberts shot and injured Steven Hirstein during a domestic violence call in March 2023. This was his second shooting within one year.
