OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 03/17/2024, at approximately 7:00 p.m., a 24-year-old Aurora resident reported to the Aurora Police Department that he was the victim of an armed carjacking near East 17th Avenue and Clinton Street. Within minutes, officers located the stolen 2007 Jeep Cherokee near the intersection of Dallas Street and East 25th Avenue. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled. Pol;ice escalated a pursuit.

The pursuit lasted approximately four blocks, ending when the driver lost control of the stolen vehicle after hitting a speed bump in the 1900 block of Dayton Street. The vehicle collided with several parked cars, including one occupied by 24-year-old Oliver Jose Zeledon Gongora. Gongora was fatally injured in the crash.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, a 17-year-old male from Aurora, was apprehended at the scene. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, treated, and released into police custody. The suspect faces charges of second-degree murder, aggravated robbery, and vehicular eluding causing death. Due to his age, his identity has not been publicly released.

The officers involved in the pursuit have been placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol. The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is conducting an independent investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash, including accident reconstruction and whether law enforcement conduct complied with Colorado law.
