OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On March 16, 2024, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Deputy Christopher Howell of the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office encountered Paul Smith, 40, at a 7-Eleven gas station near U.S. 19 and New York Avenue in Hudson, Florida. Smith was wanted on charges of domestic battery by strangulation.

Deputy Howell approached Smith, who was standing near his vehicle at a gas pump, and instructed him to exit the car. Smith entered the vehicle and attempted to drive away. Deputy Howell fired his Taser while still hanging onto the car door. He then discharged his firearm, striking Smith. The vehicle stopped, and Smith was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating the incident. Deputy Howell has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
