OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On March 15, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., officers from the Davie Police Department responded to a medical emergency at a residence in the 14500 block of Southwest 24th Street in Davie, Florida. The call concerned an unresponsive individual who had fallen and required assistance. Upon arrival, officers encountered 39-year-old Steven Gregory Amann outside the home. Amann was minimally verbal and exhibited catatonic behavior, holding an object later identified as a cell phone.

Officers instructed Amann to remain still and inquired about potential weapons. Despite his limited responsiveness, officers demanded that he lift his shirt to confirm he was unarmed. Amann made a sudden movement, raising the cell phone in his hand. Perceiving this action as a threat, Sergeant Steve Lambert, Officer Matthew Correa, and Officer Jarrett Wheeler opened fire, fatally wounding Amann. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating the incident, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
