OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
Francisco Nunez riding was in a vehicle LASD patrols identified as possibly stolen. Two people ran from the car while a 14-year-old boy was left in the car. LASD deputies shot the child in the chest and legs but he survived the shooting. The boy was one of several eyewitnesses who saw LASD deputies place Nunez in handcuffs and beating him. Nunez was found dead 5 days later 250 feet from where he had been assaulted by LASD deputies. He had blood in his mouth, hands and pants. LASD claimed that they knew nothing about it and that Nunez had never been in custody. Nunez had been a father of 8. LASD reported alleged methamphetamine toxicity as cause of death. It made no mention from the substantial bruises throughout his body as well as burn marks that appeared on his skin. The coroner met with Nunez’ family and told them he was sure methamphetamine was not the cause of death but a “fight.” The investigation was handled internally by LASD deputies known to be associated with the known #LASDGangs deputies Rivas and Leopoldo Sanchez. Sanchez was known for his affiliation with the criminal intra-LASD cop gang Banditos. The officers who allegedly detained and beat Nunez were Simi and Quesada of the notorious Lancaster LASD station.
The family has suffered significant harassment, LASD deputies frequently sitting in front of their homes or screaming obscenities at them.
