On January 2, 2024, at approximately 4:30 a.m., Kansas City Police Department officers were pursuing a suspect involved in multiple armed robberies. The suspect, driving a black Dodge Challenger, entered the northbound lanes of Interstate 435 near Missouri 210 Highway, traveling southbound against traffic. Officers terminated the pursuit upon the suspect's entry into oncoming traffic. Shortly thereafter, the suspect's vehicle collided head-on with a Chevrolet Equinox driven by 60-year-old Alphonso "Duke" Carroll, who was en route to work. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
