Watson fired at law enforcement officers, who returned fire, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No ASP Troopers or Benton Police officers were injured. On January 1, 2024, at approximately 6:30 a.m., Cedar Rapids Police Department officers responded to reports of shots fired at a residence in the 400 block of Longwood Drive NE. Witnesses reported that a sedan had driven past the residence, and an individual inside fired shots at the home.

The driver, identified as 20-year-old Michael Griffin of Cedar Rapids, did not stop. Officers escalated a pursuit spanning nearly six miles, during which Griffin allegedly fired an AR-15 rifle at least twice from his vehicle at pursuing officers.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man locked himself into the Beaumont home with the women he forced to come with him and 2 children, apparently part of a domestic crisis.
