OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On March 6, 2024, at approximately 1:00 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to a hit-and-run incident on westbound Interstate 80 east of Penryn. The suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Samuel Lee Cook, fled the scene in a Toyota pickup truck. Officers located Cook's vehicle parked on the right shoulder of I-80, just west of Penryn Road. As officers approached, Cook exited his vehicle and ran into oncoming traffic, where he was struck and killed by a big rig. The driver of the big rig remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. It is unclear why Cook ran into traffic, and investigations are ongoing to determine if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time.
