On March 1, 2024, at approximately 1:30 a.m., officers from the California State University, Chico Police Department attempted to stop a Ford Mustang for erratic driving near Big Chico Creek on Warner Street. The driver failed to yield, leading officers on a high-speed pursuit. The chase culminated when the Mustang crashed into a residence in the 900 block of The Esplanade, near East Sacramento Avenue, across from Chico High School. The collision caused the vehicle's gas tank to rupture, igniting a fire that quickly engulfed both the car and the house. Barbara Diane Ayers-Ferris, 87, was inside the home at the time and died in the blaze. Her husband was rescued and transported to a local hospital; his condition remains undisclosed.
