OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On June 17, 2024, at approximately 12:17 a.m., a Cobb County Police officer observed a 2013 BMW X5 speeding on Ernest Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw, Georgia. The officer initiated a traffic stop, but the driver did not stop. The officer pursued the vehicle briefly but "called off the chase" due to safety concerns. ShortlyImmediately thereafter, the BMW attempted to navigate a left curve near the intersection of Frey Road and Abington Walk. The driver failed to maintain the lane, causing the vehicle to exit the eastern shoulder, collide with a concrete subdivision sign, become airborne, and strike multiple trees before coming to rest approximately 90 feet into the woods. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The Cobb County Police Department's Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is investigating the incident. The identities of the driver, passenger, and involved officers have not been disclosed.
