On June 10, 2024, at approximately 5:45 a.m., Deputy Jonathan Lee of the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office was departing UNC Health Johnston in Clayton, North Carolina, in a marked patrol vehicle. As he exited the hospital parking lot, 24-year-old José Luis Rincón López approached and allegedly attempted to seize the deputy's firearm. A struggle ensued, during which Deputy Lee regained control of his weapon and discharged it, fatally wounding Rincón López. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is conducting an independent inquiry into the incident. Deputy Lee, 32, has been placed on administrative leave with pay, adhering to department policy.

Rincón López's family disputes the official account, asserting that he sought medical assistance earlier that morning after feeling unwell. According to his mother, he contacted his father from the hospital's emergency room, and the family lost communication with him thereafter. They are demanding clarity regarding the circumstances leading to his death. Rincón López, originally from Playa Vicente, Veracruz, Mexico, had emigrated to the United States in January 2022 due to limited employment opportunities in his hometown. He leaves behind an 8-year-old son, for whom he was the primary provider.
