On 06/07/2024, in Decatur, Georgia, off-duty Reserve Sergeant Michael Durieux of the Fort Valley Police Department shot and killed 37-year-old Christian Chestnut during an argument at The Exchange at Decatur apartment complex on Rainbow Drive. Witnesses reported hearing an intense altercation escalate into gunfire. After the fatal shooting, Officer Durieux fled the scene in a black sedan, which later crashed at Candler Road near Embers Drive. Responding officers discovered Durieux dead in the vehicle from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Christian Chestnut's mother, Billie Gill-Chestnut, described the tragedy as "beyond a nightmare." Chestnut is survived by his 11-year-old daughter, Sarynity. Friends and coworkers at his workplace, Kinetix, highlighted his positive influence and set up a GoFundMe campaign to support his daughter's future.

Fort Valley Police Chief DJ Flores expressed shock at the incident, noting Durieux had been a part-time reserve sergeant since October 2023. Durieux's career in law enforcement included prior roles at Georgia State University and Georgia Perimeter College.
