OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On July 30, 2024, at approximately 5:45 a.m., the Pueblo Police Department SWAT team was deployed to the 2100 block of South Drive to execute a high-risk warrant for 19-year-old James Jaramillo, who was wanted for multiple felony charges, including armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Upon arrival, SWAT officers announced their presence and attempted to negotiate with Jaramillo, who barricaded himself inside the residence. Jaramillo reportedly fired several shots at officers from within the home, prompting SWAT officers to use flashbang grenades and deploy a BearCat armored vehicle for cover as they advanced.

The confrontation escalated when Jaramillo exited the home armed with a firearm and fired at the SWAT team. Officers returned fire, striking Jaramillo. Medical personnel on standby were called to provide aid, but Jaramillo was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Pueblo Police Department has placed the involved SWAT officers on administrative leave, following standard protocol. Investigators recovered a handgun from the scene and reported that Jaramillo’s weapon was loaded and operational at the time of the shooting.
