On August 2, 2024, at approximately 5:03 p.m., Clarksdale Police Department officers responded to a disturbance at the Friars Point Convenience Store, located at 201 McGuire Cove in Clarksdale, Mississippi. During the response, police escalated an altercation with 32-year-old Ladarius Walls. Police alleged that Walls fired at the officers, injuring Lieutenant Bradley Hillhouse. Police opened fire, killing Walls. Lieutenant Hillhouse was transported to the hospital and recovered uneventfully.

Deer Park Police Department was called for a man who had been acting erratically, banging on car windows, kicking them. He was seen holding knives. On July 31, 2024, at approximately 11:18 p.m., Wichita Police Department officers observed a black Chevrolet Impala departing an area under investigation for drug trafficking. The vehicle displayed an altered and expired registration tag. Officers initiated a traffic stop, and the vehicle pulled into the McDonald's parking lot at 545 North Hillside Street in Wichita, Kansas.

Upon approaching the vehicle, officers identified three occupants. The backseat passenger, 29-year-old Brennan Russell, was observed making furtive movements and appeared to be concealing an object under the seat. Officers instructed Russell to exit the vehicle, informing him that he was under arrest. Russell refused to comply and resisted arrest, leading officers to request backup. An officer deployed a Taser through the open rear passenger door, but it failed to subdue Russell.

Russell then drew a firearm from his waistband and pointed it at the officer.
