On 07/30/2024, Littleton Police Department officers responded to the area of West Kettle Avenue and South Datura Circle after receiving a welfare check requesting assistance for 50-year-old Adam Cygan, who was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis and was believed to be suicidal. Officers located Cygan outside his residence after establishing contact.
According to investigators, Cygan exited the residence holding a handgun. Officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon. Investigators reported that Cygan continued advancing while armed and did not comply with commands. An officer fired, striking Cygan. Officers immediately rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived. Cygan was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team conducted the independent investigation. Investigators reviewed body-worn camera footage, witness interviews, forensic evidence, dispatch recordings, and the firearm recovered at the scene. After reviewing the investigation, the 18th Judicial District Attorney concluded that the officer reasonably believed Cygan posed an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury because he remained armed and failed to comply with repeated commands. The District Attorney determined the use of deadly force was legally justified under Colorado law, and no criminal charges were filed. The involved officer's identity has not been publicly released.
