OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/29/2024 at approximately 12:00 a.m., Mentone Town Marshal Keaton Schopf attempted to stop a 2010 Chevrolet Impala for speeding on State Road 25 near Princeton Street in Mentone. The driver, 17-year-old Adam Charles McDaniels of Rochester, continued driving while police pursued southbound on State Road 25 from Kosciusko County into Fulton County.
Shortly after crossing State Road 110 near County Road 700 South, McDaniels' vehicle left the east side of the roadway and struck a tree. McDaniels was pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving efforts. A juvenile passenger sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was flown to a hospital for treatment.
The Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction Team investigated the crash with assistance from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Akron Police Department, Rochester Police Department, Mentone Police Department, Fulton County Sheriff's Office, Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office, and the Fulton County Coroner's Office.
As of the latest publicly available information, no findings regarding the pursuit or any determination concerning department policy have been publicly released.
