OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/29/2024, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office received reports of a man driving erratically through Fernley, failing to stop at multiple stop signs, nearly striking pedestrians and other vehicles, and appearing intoxicated while purchasing additional alcohol at a gas station. Nevada State Police located the truck and attempted a traffic stop. The driver continued driving while police pursued, and Lyon County Sheriff's deputies later assumed the lead in the pursuit.
During the pursuit, deputies reported that the driver struck multiple vehicles, nearly hit several others, traveled at speeds exceeding 100 mph, and repeatedly rammed a sheriff's patrol vehicle. One collision disabled the patrol vehicle, but the truck continued eastbound on Newlands Drive toward Nevada Pacific Boulevard before leaving the paved roadway and continuing onto an unmaintained dirt road.
Deputies reduced their speed because of the hazardous terrain and observed the truck fishtail before rolling in a cloud of dust. When they reached the vehicle, it was on fire. Deputies pulled the driver from the burning truck and performed CPR until North Lyon County Fire Department personnel arrived. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
One Lyon County Sheriff's deputy was treated for minor injuries related to the collisions during the pursuit, and another deputy was evaluated after being exposed to biohazards while rescuing the driver from the burning vehicle.
The Nevada State Police investigated the pursuit and crash, while the Storey County Sheriff's Office conducted the coroner's investigation. As of the latest publicly available information, the driver's identity has not been released.
